'Wonder Woman's Teaser Is All About Feminism

by Caitlyn Callegari

I may or may not have spent a majority of my childhood pretending I was Wonder Woman. OK, I did. I totally did. So, you can imagine that the new Wonder Woman Exclusive First Look teaser video has thrilled me endlessly. But, the thing is, it's going to thrill you too, deep seated superhero aspirations or not. It's because this first look isn't just about action and bad assery. It's a bold statement on feminism and what Wonder Woman means to little girls like I once was, to women, and to men alike.

On the more standard end of things, actress Gal Gadot's take on Wonder Woman looks to be a superhero movie of epic proportions. One, that fans have long yearned for. It's dark, it's gritty, it's dramatic, it's action packed, and beautifully shot. In the brief glimpse we're given, it's apparent that this movie was made with the care that a legendary story like the tale of Wonder Woman deserves be told. Especially since it is a professed origin story and we have to see her earn and achieve her glory, not just bask in it.

But, perhaps the greatest part of this "First Look" goes beyond the film footage. It's the commentary on the feminist statement that Wonder Woman makes that has me truly pumped for the phenomenon that this movie will likely create. So first, check out the clip below. But, once you're done, read on to see kickass feminst quotes that are going to keep me going until it's time to actually watch this thing.

The Movie Has A Lot Riding On It

"Telling a story like this now, is pivotal and important. It's the story of a very powerful woman," said Chris Pine. I think we can just leave that as it is. It's pretty perfect already.

Her Character Has A Huge Legacy To Work With

Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics said that, "[Wonder Woman] is the best fighter in the entire DC Universe." Take that, Batman and Superman. These are some serious (and seriously awesome) words. But more so than that, he explained, "She stands for equality, and that's really important. I think that's why people love the character." OK, so she kicks ass and she stands for equality. I am in love.

And in case all that explanation was too all over the place for you, Kevin Smith had a simpler way of declaring Wonder Woman's importance: "Wonder Woman's been around for 75 years. Feminist cultural icon." That's certainly one way to keep it simple.

But Why Do We All Care So Much?

Wonder Woman director, Patty Jenkins knocked it out of the park, when she said, "The greatest thing about Wonder Woman is how good and kind and loving she is. Yet, none of that negates any of her power."

Hi, can I line up for Wonder Woman now? Is that totally insane? I'm already so, so pumped.
