These Are The '90s Trends You Can Still Rock Today

by Kali Borovic

It's time to dig through your closet and find your chokers, because the '90s are back, my friends. The style of that era was so iconic that everyone from fashion designers to millennials have had a hard time letting some of the fads go. Because so many people have a soft spot in their hearts for the era, re-vamping '90s trends for today is way easier than you might think. With plenty of celebrities already on your side, there's no shame in bringing back some old classics with a modern twist.

Unlike other eras, the stand-out accessories of the '90s are easy to adapt to fit modern sensibilities. Filled with chokers, menswear, and slip dresses, it's was an era where truly anything could be cool. There were so many different styles — grunge, preppy, minimalist — all rolled into one decade, and it only makes sense that some of the best trends would already be making a comeback. If you're looking for a way to freshen up your outfit, you might want to look to the past.

Of course, every trend dies for a reason, so as much as you might have your heart set on an oldie but goodie, your old accessories probably need a modern twist to make it in today's fashion landscape. The basics might be the same, but there are simple styling tricks that you can do to give your '90s throwbacks a modern feel. It's easier than you might think!

1. Menswear

The '90s were a magical time where people just grabbed their boyfriend's clothes and wore them out the door. Instead of doing exactly that, try an oversized blazer or a pair of boyfriend jeans. That way you can balance the silhouette with something fitted while giving off the slouchy effect.

2. Leopard Print

The key to bringing this print back to life is making one piece the focus of the entire outfit. In the '90s, people would rock a leopard pant or purse with ease, but now it's all about being particular.

3. Chokers

Who didn't love those black elastic chokers? To make it a little more modern, pick something that has a little shine to it. Whether that's a small charm or a thick, gold statement piece, adding a metallic element gives a choker just the right pop.

4. Brown Lipstick

Brown lipstick is back in just about every single shade. The easiest way to give it a fresh feel is to make it matte rather than opting for full-on '90s gloss.

5. Sneakers

All white, thick-soled shoes are making a huge comeback. The key is to mix-and-match them with a dressier looking outfit.

6. Overalls

In the '90s, overalls were baggy and more like menswear. To update them, just make sure the pant is fitted and pair it with a crop top underneath, just like Swift.

7. Denim Everything

This one's been around for a few years now, and it's not going anywhere any time soon. Making this look more modern is as simple as tucking in your shirt for a more fitted silhouette. Also notes her leopard print shoes!

8. Halter Tops

If you're looking to bring your halter back, just make sure it's either low-cut, strappy, or has a cutout. It's not a new silhouette anymore, so you have to find a way to make it more unique.

9. Slip Dresses

This is one of my favorite comebacks of all time. To master it in 2016, just go minimal from head to toe. Skip the pop of color even on the lip, because a slip dress will stand out on its own.

10. Button-Up Skirts

This mini style came out of nowhere to make a comeback, and all it needed to become modern was a high-waisted fit.

11. Hair Clips

As much as butterfly clips were every girl's staple in the '90s, I don't see them coming back any time soon. Instead, go for a sleek and simple accessory, like multiple bobby pins.

12. Knee-High Socks

Thigh-high boots are the new knee-high socks. Period.

13. Leather

To pull off leather today, you either need a fitted skirt or pant or a really awesome jacket. The choice is yours, but don't get too carried away.

Who knew '90s trends could look so chic in 2016?!
