9 'Bachelor' Couples That Were Doomed To Fail

by Emily Lackey

Oh, The Bachelor. Every time a new season airs, I get all of those feelings associated with love: The Butterflies, the anxiety, the disappointment and inevitable letdown. Because every season ultimately ends in one of two things: A proposal or a breakup. Sure, there have been a few couples that have irked by the dismal statistics of how many Bachelor romances actually find their happily ever after, but, for the most part, those relationships are doomed from the start. And there have been plenty of times when people should not have gotten engaged on The Bachelor.

You know the ones. They were the couples that you knew from the word go were totally wrong for each other. Either there was a clear case of picking the wrong person or enough of a personality disparity for anyone on the outside to see that they were totally headed toward splitsville.

Not that I really blame the contestants for getting swept up in the magic of the show and pressure to pop the question. Hell, if someone handed me a hot guy and a $75,000 ring, I’d probably get down on one knee too. Let’s be real. Especially if that hot guy was Ben Higgins, as the hosts of Bustle's Will You Accept This Podcast? can attest.

Still, these Bachelor couples should have known better. Their relationships were disastrous from the start, and most of them never should have gotten engaged in the first place.

These two split after just a couple of weeks. You know it’s bad when you can’t even count your engagement in months.

2. Andrew Firestone & Jen Schefft

This couple definitely aren't the biggest offenders. They’re still friends, after all, but they only made it a few months outside of the mansion before calling it quits.

3. Byron Velvick & Mary Delgado

Talk about a long engagement. Byron and Mary split after five years together, but there were a number of issues between the two before their official split.

4. Andrew Baldwin & Tessa Horst

These two called off their engagement after one month, but declared that they were still staying together. Um, yeah. Backsliding in a relationship is never a good sign. They ended their relationship just a few months later.

5. Jason Mesnick & Melissa Rycroft

By the season finale, Mesnick had called of the engagement. Later he would propose to the runner-up, Molly Malaney. Talk about a brutal rejection.

6. Jake Pavekla & Vienna Girardi

Doomed from the start, these two were. With their vastly different lifestyles, values, and upbringings, this was a clear case of The Bachelor falling for the wrong girl.

7. Brad Womack & Emily Maynard

On his second time as The Bachelor, Womack was able to pick a girl, but not ultimately commit. The two split in the middle of the season airing. They got back together after the finale, but called it quits for good just a few months later.

8. Ben Flajnik & Courtney Robertson

These two may have seemed sweet from the start, but their love was a rocky one. They broke up while their season was still airing, later reconciled, got engaged for a second time, and then broke up for good in October of 2012. Yowza, that’s a lot of ups and downs.

9. Chris Soules & Whitney Bischoff

Two months after the season ended, these two were calling it off for good. But there were plenty of red flags from the start for these two to have known better than to take their engagement that far.

It just goes to show that reality TV is a tricky place to find love. Romance and fireworks? Sure. Stability and commitment? Maybe not so much.
