9 Funny Valentine's Day Date Ideas

by Kat Kuehl

I've never considered myself much of a romantic — in fact, extreme romance often makes me feel a little awkward and uncomfortable. So, when the holiday of love finally rolls around, I usually find myself frantically searching for some funny Valentine's Day date ideas that inspire my husband and I to get out and celebrate, without torturing ourselves with those standard roses, chocolates, and candlelit dinners.

Traditionally, Valentine's Day is all about that mush, gush, and nearly vomit-inducing romance. And, if you and your significant other truly enjoy that sort of thing, more power to you. This day was made for you. But, my husband and I? We just can't get into all of the sappy, heart-shaped goodies that come along with the day. It's not that we don't believe in being romantic, per se. It's just that my idea of romance is the fact that he empties the dishwasher without being asked, or takes the dog outside when it's snowing and below zero.

With all of that being said, we still love to have fun together. So, I look for any reason to get out and just enjoy spending time with one another. If we can laugh while doing so? Well, that's even better.

That's the great thing about these funny Valentine's Day date ideas. They're not only great inspiration to get out and have some fun with your significant other. But, they're also sure to inspire a few laughs between you and the person you love.

1. Attend an improv comedy show

Maybe attending a comedy show is a totally obvious way to have a funny-themed Valentine's date. But, it's still sure to get you and your significant other laughing. An improv comedy show is even better, as there's a chance for audience members to get involved. Bonus points to you or your partner if one of you has the guts to get up on stage!

2. Visit a roller rink

Oh, roller rinks. The completely cliché date locations of the past. Let the good times roll (literally) by taking a spin (or a shuffle, in my case) around the rink. There's something about the music, lights, totally retro vibe, and the smell of used skates that just creates the perfect recipe for humor. And, it's even funnier if you and your partner have absolutely no clue how to skate.

3. Coordinate an unbearably cheesy date

So, you and your loved one typically don't buy into all of the mushy hullaballoo that comes along with Valentine's Day. What could be funnier than throwing yourself completely into the theme of the holiday? I'm talking candlelit dinners, long-stem roses, chocolates, and teddy bears. Challenge yourselves to have the most ridiculously over the top Valentine's Day date ever, and you're guaranteed to laugh the whole way through.

4. Play a game of truth or dare

Remember when you were in middle school and truth or dare seemed like the most risky thing you were capable of? Well, when's the last time you played it? Grab your partner for your favorite adolescent game and see what happens. I mean, it's impossible not to laugh when one of you is doing a lap around your yard in your underwear.

5. Recreate your first date

For most couples, the first date is a fond memory. But, it's also usually somewhat hilarious to reflect on. Talking about it is one thing, but completely recreating it takes things to a whole different level. Our first date? Well, it involved breakfast food and me picking up the tab, because the restaurant didn't even accept credit cards. I smile just thinking about it, so I can't even imagine how funny it'd be to try to relive the experience.

6. Go to a karaoke bar

I'm a big fan of karaoke. So, I think it'd make the perfect Valentine's date. Set the rules that you and your partner each get to pick the song that the other performs, and then get to it. I mean, I can't really think of anything funnier than my husband crooning Shania Twain's "Man! I Feel Like a Woman".

7. Participate in a little friendly competition

There's never anything wrong with incorporating a little competition into your relationship — even on Valentine's Day. Whether it's miniature golf, bowling, laser tag, or a board game at your own kitchen table, challenging your partner is sure to liven up your date. What makes it even more fun? A friendly wager.

8. Reminisce

If you've been with your significant other for a while, sometimes there's nothing more hilarious — and slightly mortifying — than reminiscing on when you first got together. Flipping through old pictures is a surefire way to inspire some laughs. My outfit choices alone are enough to conjure up tears of both laughter and embarrassment.

9. Plan a scavenger hunt

A scavenger hunt is one of those things that can run the gamut from wonderfully romantic to unbelievably hysterical. Coordinate one for your partner that involves all sorts of ridiculous tasks and clues. Not only will your partner laugh while doing it, but you're also bound to love watching them try to figure it all out.
