You Know You Loved These Olsen Twin Accessories

by Julia Musto

Remember when Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen dictated all of your '90's fashion accessory game? Or did you black that part of your style history out like I did? I definitely don't remember the MK & A-inspired flamingo pink, beaded and strappy platform flip flops I wore with my mid-calf length blue paisley skirt in middle school. However, my red jewel-tone choker will always remain in my heart, despite the past few decades of progress in style and fashion.

The power twins were considered the height of little kid fashion in the '90s, yet a lot of their retro looks seemed like they walked out of a present-day American Apparel. However, some of their accessories definitely seem outdated these days, only to be worn as part of a joke costume on Halloween.

The Olsen twins have seemingly ousted all remnants of their previous lives for high fashion, French men, and allegedly cigarette-themed weddings, but they cannot erase their historical impact on those growing up alongside them watching Full House, Our Lips Are Sealed, or Passport to Paris, et cetera. With that in mind, I want to take a look back on all of those accessories you bought to look like the Olsens that are now sitting in a box in your garage:

1. Cute Bows

You and your mother thought that bows were cute and feminine parts of every outfit back in the day, and you can probably blame the Olsens for that.

2. Decorated Overalls

Overalls were somewhat of a staple in the '90s, especially cutesy ones with floral decals.

3. Cowboy Hats

Cowboy hats and jean jackets, oh my!

4. Tiny Shades

In my experience with sunglasses in the 2010s, the bigger the better! But tiny sunnies were huge back in the day.

5. Butterfly Clips & Platform Sandals

This look was a major '90s Olsen go-to and may be their most iconic style from the era. Peep those butterfly clips!

6. Giant Watches

These chunky watches were super covetable back in the day.

7. Sweater Sets

My mother is the #3 fan of the matching sweater sets, right behind the Olsen twins circa 1995. However, she also wears Rag & Bone sweaters and coats, so I can't complain.

8. All Of The Chokers

To be fair, these are totally hot right now.

9. More Platform Sandals

I swear this is just becoming a list of my many fashion failures from childhood. I tried so hard to be Sam Stanton in Switching Goals.

10. Beaded Bracelets

Because of the Olsens, I thought layering beaded bracelets made a look fancier. Oh, was I wrong.

11. Matching Flowers

Florals? For Spring? I can just picture Meryl Streep cringing.

12. Baseball Caps

The ultimate mark of a "sporty" look.

13. Bandanas

These were usually worn with. . .

14. Matching Scrunchies

Oof, there they are. I had sparkly ones, plaid ones, velvet ones, et cetera.

15. Barrettes

I know that you, like me, probably had barrettes in every different color. Did yours always break too?

16. Matching Straw Hats

I honestly don't know why these were ever a thing. What is this, Anne of Green Gables?

I hope you have learned as well as I from the Olsen twins.
