An SAT Expert Is Heading To 'Shark Tank'

by Rosie Narasaki

Founded by Shaan Patel (a veritable 2400 expert in his own right) back in 2011, SAT prep program 2400 Expert is coming to Shark Tank this week. There are lots of SAT prep companies out there, so what exactly sets 2400 Expert apart? Well, according to the company's website, Patel actually nabbed a perfect score himself — and then there's the arguably even more enticing fact that he told the Las Vegas Sun 2400 Expert has an average score boost of 368. Oh, and the website lists a "100% money-back guarantee."

So, how can you start locking down those perfect scores for yourself? Right now, 2400 Expert's tutoring and prep classes are available in 20 different cities, and if you live in one of those areas, you can purchase a seven-week course for $999. If you live elsewhere, you can enroll in one of the company's six-week online courses for $599 to $699 (classes taught by Patel himself are $200 extra). That's quite the hefty chunk of change, but as the website points out, it breaks down to $10 to $17 per hour, which is actually fairly reasonable (especially when you take a look at the school's considerable success stories).

Aside from their success stories, Patel himself might be one of the biggest selling points — according to a profile in Business Insider, "He was the valedictorian of his class, was crowned homecoming king, and even shook President George W. Bush's hand in 2007 as a White House Presidential Scholar." Plus, he's something of a success story in his own right — the first time he took the PSAT, he scored 1760, eventually raising his score to the coveted 2400.

As reported by Business Insider, Patel started the company the summer between finishing up his undergraduate degree and starting medical school (both at USC). He kicked things off with a test prep book that ended up getting rejected by several publishers, but rallied with an SAT prep course that took off in a major way after boosting its students scores by an unprecedented average of 376 points in his first class. Word got around, and the rest is history — oh, and after his course took off, McGraw-Hill ended up publishing Patel's book, SAT 2400 in Just Seven Steps , after all. Business Insider also reports that he's made a hefty $4 million since launching the company back in 2011.

Plus, Patel has put an interesting spin on the Shark Tank proceedings — he started a social media campaign to make this episode break the show's record for viewership, and even blogged about how to make it onto the show. But we'll have to wait and see if the Sharks invest before deeming him a Shark Tank expert too.
