I Gave Crystal Infused Skincare Products A Try

by Augusta Statz

If you're anything like me, you've heard of using crystals in your beauty products before, and you've likely admired the tiny gems inside of bottles on store shelves. But, you never really knew how they could benefit your skin, nor had you really even considered trying them. I was intrigued by the idea of beautiful bobbles pampering my skin, however, so I decided to put the healing power of gemstones to the test. I tried crystal-infused skincare for a week, and I could really tell they were making a difference. Prior to this little experiment, I had no idea what my aura looked like (and still don’t) or even what a “chakra” was, so, needless to say, I had a lot to learn along the way.

Gems may be great for the skin, but they’re also meant to promote inner beauty, as well. I could definitely get behind something that was going to make me look and feel good. So, I'm sure you're wondering (just like I was): how do the crystals work exactly? Well, some products have been soaked in crystals or have stones that have been ground into powder present in them, and since what's applied to your skin can be absorbed into your bloodstream, you get the benefits of the stones inside and out.

I used crystal-infused creams and sprays in my beauty routine for one week, and I can honestly say that they really made a difference in my skin. Read on for exactly what happened.

Before:

This is my skin before any kind of gemstone application. I had a few breakouts near my eyebrows and on my nose, and I was curious before the start of the experiment to see if these products would clear that up.

During:

Gemstone Organic Clary Sage Hydrosol Gem Juice, $23, Amazon; Gemstone Organic Rose Quartz Face Creme , $42, Amazon

This was my process for the entire week: I washed my face as I normally would, morning and night, following up with a clary sage spritz and a rose quartz face cream as moisturizer, both from Gemstone Organic. The clary sage is supposed to act as a toner, while boosting optimism. It's light and refreshing and has pretty crystals floating around in the bottle. According to the label, "Aventurine and calcite essences boost the medicinal properties of the flower, healing various skin conditions and flare ups while cleansing your emotional body to comfort you, bringing in optimism and hope."

The rose quartz moisturizer, on the other hand, is made for all skin types and is supposed to make skin more vibrant while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It's associated with the heart chakra (which I know how means the center of spiritual power in the body), and therefore is supposed to make you more open to love and forgiveness.

This photo was taken four days into the experiment. The acne near my brows and nose cleared up a little, and what I noticing about the products is that they really drew out any bumps under the skin, but by the next day they cleared much of the redness. My skin definitely looked a little worse before it looked better, but the products worked to clear my breakouts quickly.

At this stage in the experiment, I wasn't sure if I felt more hopeful or forgiving, per se, but I did like the way the products made my skin feel more hydrated and very soft since I started using them. The items smelled really nice, so I tried to breathe deeply while applying them.

To increase the shelf life of the rose quartz cream it can be refrigerated, and I tried this out just because it seemed like it'd be refreshing. It was really is nice to have that cooling feeling on your skin first in the morning and right before bed, so I highly recommend storing in the refrigerator should you try this product out.

Towards the end of the experiment, I reached out to Debra Haugen, the Chief Alchemist at Gemstone Organic to ask her about the effects of the crystal skincare. I'd noticed since using these products that I was sleeping really soundly at night. The clary sage is supposed to be calming and relaxing, so I wasn't sure if my sleeping well was due to my new skincare routine or just a happy coincidence. "We have had others say that our Gem Juice hydrosols are calming and help with sleep — so most likely not a coincidence," Haugen says. Kind of crazy that your skincare regimen can also help you get a little extra beauty sleep too, isn't it?

After:

This photo was taken after seven full days of using the crystal-infused skincare. I can tell that my breakouts have diminished or at least are less red now. I think that's partly because of the clary sage toning my skin and the rose quartz working to give me a healthy glow. These two products really seem to work well together.

Final Verdict:

I'm not going to pretend like these crystals made me feel more open, hopeful or loving in a week's time, at least not in any noticeable way. But, I did recognize a calming effect as a result of using them, both for my skin, which lost some of its redness, and for my self in that I slept like a baby the whole week. I feel like I really should have tried this skincare method sooner.

This experiment taught me that there really is something to the idea of crystals healing the body inside and out. I may not have experienced anything super life-changing, but, a good night's sleep and clear skin is good enough for me, even if that's the extent of the benefits.

I plan on continuing to use these products, because they've definitely earned their place in my medicine cabinet. I've seen first-hand that using crystals in your skincare can really work. So, they're not on the shelf in my bathroom just because those gemstones are pretty — although that part doesn't hurt.
