If Designers Couldn't Wear Their Own Designs, Who Would They Wear?
It's pretty safe to assume that most designers wear their own designs most of the time. By doing so, it shows a certain level of confidence in their own vision, proof that if they believe in the look, so should you. But what if they couldn't or weren't allowed to wear their own pieces?
What would Diane von Furstenberg wear in place of her iconic wrap dress? Who would clothe Donna Karan in her signature black drape-y layers? And if Victoria Beckham couldn't show off her skin-tight pencil dresses on a regular basis, who would be responsible for her "look" instead? Don't panic. We have some ideas if such a thing were to actually happen — who would dress who, and why, right this way.
Alexander Wang Would Wear... Joseph Altuzarra
While Joseph Altuzarra may only design womenswear for now, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t whip up some gender-neutral layers for his friend, Alexander Wang. The two are often seen hanging out on the fashion “scene” together, and if their Fall 2013 shows weren’t evidence enough of their likeminded-ness (see: exhibit A and exhibit B), then let’s just settle on the fact that we selfishly like the idea of the two wunderkind collaborating.
Tibi's Amy Smilovic Would Wear... Phoebe Philo's Céline
At quick glance, Tibi designer Amy Smilovic could almost be mistaken for Céline designer Phoebe Philo. But similar appearances are beside the point. We have it on good authority that Smilovic actually does love — and own — a lot of Céline, which makes sense considering she does dress the part of the understated Parisian chic woman.
Rebecca Minkoff Would Wear... 3.1 Phillip Lim
Rebecca Minkoff subscribes to a wardrobe of mostly black and white, with a well-placed pop of print and a great shoe and bag to tie everything together. Who better to equip her with covet-worthy accessories (Pashli!) and sleek downtown separates than Phillip Lim? Once Minkoff’s Greene St. store in SoHo finally opens, the two designers will be just a block apart. Fate?
Vera Wang Would Wear... Theyskens' Theory
Vera Wang needs black, slim-cut, slightly edgy pieces for her small, lanky frame — and lots of them to layer. Theyskens’ Theory by Olivier Theyskens features every item of clothing Wang could ever want or need, but for good measure, she should probably start with this look.
Carolina Herrera Would Wear... Narciso Rodriguez
Carolina Herrera is pretty predictable in the way of outfits, with a crisp white blouse and black A-line skirt as her go-to. Narciso Rodriguez knows his way around clean lines, angular cuts, and super simple styling. Carolina meet Narciso — problem solved.
Victoria Beckham Would Wear... Burberry Prorsum
Victoria Beckham wears Victoria Beckham better than anyone, but if she truly couldn’t wear her own designs, we’d want her to support a fellow Brit. Christopher Bailey, head designer of Burberry Prorsum, is just the guy to dress her — his slinky pencil skirts, ultra-tailored trenches, and quirky bags are right up Beckham’s alley.
Anna Sui Would Wear... Miu Miu
Kitschy, fun, and more often than not, colorful — all descriptors point to the fact that Anna Sui and Miu Miu are a match made in style heaven.
Donna Karan Would Wear... Calvin Klein
Known for her affinity to louche, dark clothing, Donna Karan both dresses and designs for the minimalist. But if she can’t wear her own pieces, designer Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein certainly gave her a Spring 2014 collection that fills the void. Look 35 all the way.
Zac Posen Would Wear... Ralph Lauren
Zac Posen, maker of beautifully dreamy glamour gowns, tends to dress one-part dapper, one-part Americana rugged. There’s a bit of tongue-in-cheek dandy involved, too, which makes me think Ralph Lauren’s three-piece looks, complete with leather gloves and fur collars, would feel right at home in Posen’s closet.
