Derek Zoolander & Hansel Join 'SNL' & It's Fierce

by Marisa LaScala

Bernie Sanders wasn't the only one to show up and talk politics on the February 7 episode of Saturday Night Live. A pair of unexpected commentators also showed up. Derek Zoolander and Hansel weighed in on the presidential race on Weekend Update. "We're here to talk about what everybody wants to hear male models talk about: politics," Hansel said. And, strangely enough, they had some interesting insights. "Hillary's from the '90s," they noted, "which are very hot right now." So true!

Then again, there were moments when they didn't seem as well informed on politics as they were on fashion. "They just had the Iowa couscous," he said, "which I skipped because I don't eat carbs." Oh, Zoolander. That sounds like the kind of comment someone would make if they couldn't read good.

Though they were there to promote Zoolander 2, together, Zoolander and Hansel ran down the current crop of presidential candidates, and evaluated them according to style. Poor Bernie Sanders was deemed to "JC Penney" for their tastes. Donald Trump, on the other hand, had "classic male model looks," only, instead of Blue Steele, Trump's looks had names like "Orange Mocha Crappucino" — and, more cuttingly "second place."

It was a shameless movie plug, but a well done and well written one. They did more on the show than just be really, really, ridiculously good looking. They might not have swayed my vote, but I'd watch their political crosstalk any day.
