2000s Hairstyles You Secretly Loved & Still Do

by Emily McClure

Let's be honest — the 2000s were filled with horrible hair trends. From tiger-striped highlights to extremely side swept bangs, it definitely wasn't the best decade for stylish 'dos. However, even though a lot of these trends were completely ridiculous, there are a few hairstyles from the 2000s that we all secretly loved. I don't know if it was the confidence that came from these killer 'dos, or the appeal of looking like a Hilton sister, but there was a reason that we all gravitated towards these crazy hair styles. Who knows? Maybe we all just secretly wanted frosted tips.

As a teenage girl growing up in the early 2000s, there are plenty of fashion choices that I know I personally regret (looking at you, trucker hats). However, when it came to my hair, I don't regret a lot of the style choices that I made. Even though I probably looked a little ridiculous in hindsight, I can't be upset by the confidence that these hairstyles made me feel. In all honesty, there is just something about feeling like a badass eighth grader that you have to appreciate. So, let's go ahead and take a walk down memory lane. Here are nine hair style from the 2000s that we all secretly loved.

1. Very Bold Highlights

Forget subtlety! In the early '00s, it was all about bold, blonde highlighted streaks. Everyone from Jessica Simpson to Kelly Clarkson was seen rocking this crazy hair color trend. The tiger striped look was definitely in, and we all adored it.

2. Super Straight Hair With Middle Part

I'm very guilty of loving this trend. As we all know, flat irons were a girl's best friend during the 2000s. Before heading to the mall to browse Limited Too, we would grab our flat irons, and flatten our hair to total perfection. To make matters even worse, we all opted for the middle part. It was the cool-girl thing to do.

3. Crimped Hair

While there were girls who could definitely pull off this trend back in the day, I wasn't one of them (even thought I wanted to be). Anyone else having flashbacks to chunky body glitter and plastic headbands?

4. Dramatic Two-Toned Hair Color

This was the quintessential "I'm no longer a teenie bopper" hairstyle. It was as if every female celebrity going through a "rebellious phase" opted for this dramatic hair color trend.

5. Scene Hair

It's time to break our Myspace playlists, and talk about our feelings. Being a teenager in the early 2000s was hard, and we had to excess our angst somehow. S/O to all the cool moms who let us dye our hair crazy colors and cut our bangs all in the name of "expressing ourselves."

6. Headbands

Headbands were everywhere in during the 2000s. From thick, scarf headbands to tiny, plastic ones, no fashionista was caught dead without this signature hair accessory. It was an easy way to transform our looks from basic to preppy AF.

7. Frosted Tips

Weren't guys will highlighted hair just totally sexy back in the day? Like no judgement on your frosted tips. You probably do have a killer EP that's about to drop.

8. Tiny Poofs

To this day, I'm a die-hard fan of LC and the Laguna Beach gang, so I thought it would be great to throw it back to one of the girls' signature hairdos. This half-back style was seen on almost every cast member, and had teenage audience scrambling to find their bobby pins.

9. Extensions

Extensions during the 2000s were rough. They were usually too long, too stringy, and too ridiculous. However, even though they were totally obvious, we all loved them. There was nothing like clipping in fresh extensions from the beauty supply store to make you feel like the prettiest girl at the eighth grade dance.

Who knows? Maybe some of these trends will come back sometime soon and it won't seem all that bad this time around.
