Selena's "Hands To Myself" Might be About Justin

by Jennifer Still

I'll be honest with you — for the longest time, I really didn't give Selena Gomez enough credit as an artist. Sure, I liked "Love You Like A Love Song" when it came out back in 2011, but I sorta figured she was a one hit wonder, as far as good pop music went. I'm here to admit that I was wrong. Really, extremely wrong. With the release of her latest album, Revival, in 2015, Gomez established herself as a force to be reckoned with, capable of making an album full of absolute jams. And when she released "Hands To Myself", one of my favorite cuts from the album, as a single late last year, I was thrilled because it's a damn good song. But is Gomez's "Hands To Myself" about Justin Bieber? That's the real question we all want to know about, right?

Gomez and Bieber have been an on again, off again couple for basically as long as they've been our collective memories. When you think of one of them, you likely think of the other. Over the course of the past few years, they've broken up and gotten back together again more times than I can count on both hands, and given that they've both admitted that they haven't shut the door on possibly reconciling again in future, this is even more likely — at least in my book.

Think about it: Selena Gomez may have dated Zedd and probably a few other guys, but she's spent a huge chunk of the past five years with Bieber. Even if she didn't write "Hands To Myself" (and it should be noted that she didn't — it was actually written by Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, Mattman & Robin, and Max Martin — it's probably fair to say that Gomez looks for songs that she can relate to when she's picking tracks to record for her album. There had to be something in "Hands To Myself" she related to, and it's natural to link those feelings back to Bieber, who served as her first in many ways.

When Gomez sings about being told that her lover is "no good" and her insistence on standing by his side and wanting to "breathe him in" every day if she could, the first (and frankly, the only) person who comes to mind is Bieber. Sure, it could be a meaningless pop song that's just fun to dance along to, but I don't think it's a far-fetched connection to say that Gomez likely had Bieber in mind when she was singing it. I don't know about you, but I'm still hoping for a reunion between them. I believe they can make it! What can I say? I'm a hopeless romantic.
