11 Celebs With Great Stories About How They Met

by Caitlyn Callegari

Listen, we don’t all have grandiose stories about meeting our significant others. Sometimes you bump into someone at the grocery store. Other times you match on Tinder. Meeting your potential partner isn’t as romantic as rom-coms make it seem. Well, until it is. To prove it, there are a considerable amount of celebrities who have great stories about meeting their significant others. They range from uber romantic to impossibly sentimental, but each and every one sounds like a work of fiction, because they’re all so very perfect in their own way.

Whether you yourself are a romantic or not, these stories serve to thaw the iciest heart, because while they’re all very whimsical and seemingly unattainable, there’s no doubt that they’re genuine. And in addition to that, it’s so funny to see these gorgeous celebs who appear to have it all, voice their doubts about their respective partners deeming them worthy. Apparently, all really is fair in love and war, and celebrities aren’t exempt from the worry and anxiety we all face over meeting someone new who could potentially be our significant other.

Here are 11 celebrity couples who will have great stories to tell their future grandkids about how they met.

1. Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively

In an interview on SiriusXM's Entertainment Weekly Radio Deadpool Special , Reynolds said,

About a year after Green Lantern had come and gone and we were both single we went on a double date — she was on a date with another guy and I was on a date with another girl — and it was like the most awkward date for the respective parties because we were just like fireworks coming across... We were buddies for a long time, which I think is the best way to have a relationship, to start as friends.

I concur, Mr. Reynolds. Friends to lovers is my personal favorite trope (in real life and fiction).

2. Emma Roberts & Evan Peters

Roberts and Peters originally met on the set of Adult World, but Peters was "weirded" out by her. Roberts said in an interview with Chelsea Handler, "He literally didn't speak to me the entire movie. He thought I was so weird. I had no makeup, it looks like I cut my own hair off, so I was not exactly looking cute." No worries, though. They eventually started filming American Horror Story together and Peters got to truly know Roberts.

3. Chris Pratt & Anna Farris

In a response to fan question on Reddit about meeting Faris on set, Pratt explained,

Anna and I are meant to be together. Our relationship has made me believe in divine intervention and destiny, just as much as my crazy career and the way I fell into this life. She and I grew up 20 minutes away from each other but never met until we met in LA. We both got our start in horror spoofs. We both did an animated movie for Phil Lord and Chris Miller. We both made our careers playing guileless nitwits for laughs. We both have parents that have suffered with MS. The similarities go on and on.

Listen, I'm not his grandkid, but he can tell me that story over and over again if he'd like to.

4. Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka

Burtka and NPH told Out Magazine that they thought they were out of each other's leagues and thus had multiple missed connections. More specifically, Harris told Out,

I ran into my friend Kate one day and she was with this brooding, James Dean–type guy in a leather jacket who gave me the head nod and then turned away. I assumed he was Kate’s boyfriend and said, "Nicely done." And she said, "David? He’s not playing on my team, but he has a boyfriend" ... So, I was always around when he was around, hoping the stars would align. When we all hung out for the first time — I was invited by Kate to an American Idol viewing party — I just stammered around him. I couldn’t take my eyes off him.

5. Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith

Pinkett Smith first met her husband when she auditioned for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air to play his girlfriend. The kicker, though? She didn't get the part. Someone somewhere wrote a song about this, didn't they? Ah, right! "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might just find, you get what you need." Thanks, Rolling Stones.

6. Taylor Swift & Calvin Harris

Ellie Goulding explained to MTV News of Swift and Harris,

I’m not sure if they met beforehand, but certainly when we were at the Brits he came over and chatted to us. Because I was like "come over." To be honest, I think they would have met anyway. It’s such a small world, you have no idea. We have so many mutual friends. It’s a very small world, so I think they would have met anyway. They are both really beautiful people, so I’m sure they would have met.

I like the romantic notion that they would have met no matter what. It's very rom-com.

7. Emily Blunt & John Krasinski

The best thing about how Krasinski and Blunt met was how he was instantly enamored with her. He told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview, "I met her and I was so nervous. I was like, 'Oh god, I think I'm going to fall in love with her.' As I shook her hand I went, 'I like you.'" *Blows nose loudly into tissue*

8. Ellen DeGeneres & Portia De Rossi

De Rossi told CBS Sunday Morning of meeting DeGeneres,

I instantly adored her. But I was very closeted and very heavy. And I thought that no one would ever love me if… they knew I was gay and especially if they saw I was fat. The fact that she noticed me at that point and liked who I was, was kind of significant. Yeah, it was great.

9. Chrissy Teigen & John Legend

Teigen and Legend met on one of his music video shoots, and she explained exactly how it went down in an interview with Wendy Williams.

10. Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis

In the most adorable of adorable stories, Kunis told W Magazine ,

My first real kiss ever was with him on the show. And when That '70s Show had a prom, my date for the prom turned out to be my fiancé. We can honestly say that we went to prom together! Although I do think that in that episode I went home with someone else. We don’t talk about that part... We all get movie star crushes. I’m marrying mine.

There you go, guys. There's hope for the rest of us, Mila Kunis says so.

11. Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan Tatum

Tatum explained to Redbook after being asked why he and Dewan Tatum didn't date until after they were done filming Step Up,

We were basically together on the movie. It's interesting now, because we can watch it and see; we can go, "Oh, wow, that was actually our real first kiss." As soon as the movie wrapped, we went back to L.A. and were together, and together ever since — never broken up. That's nine years."

It's always nice to have documentation. That way you have to do less explaining if someone asks.

See? I told you your heart would thaw.
