If The '90s Had Instagram

by Lara Rutherford-Morrison

This new video from BuzzFeed imagines what it would have been like if we’d had Instagram in the 90s. Would we have been posting selfies with our Ring Pops? Would we have been chilling with Blockbuster instead of Netflix? Would there be Beanie Babies in every shot?? The world will never know.

As fun as it is to imagine how we might have incorporated 90s pop culture into social media back in the day (I would like to think I’d have had an Alanis Morissette-centric Instagram account called “@IsntItIronic,” in which I posted photo after photo of things that may or may not actually be ironic), but, to be honest, I am eternally thankful that the closest things we had to social media back then were AIM and chatrooms (which, let’s be fair, were mostly filled with creepsters). We all know that the Internet Is Forever, and I’m just happy that my teenaged angst and terrible poetry isn’t immortalized on Tumblr (because, I’ll fully admit, if Tumblr had existed when I was 15, I would have spent all my waking hours sitting in my room, reblogging Daria gifs, pictures of Shirley Manson, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan art.)

This video’s 90s version of Instagram doesn’t only include 90s-era subjects in the images; it also crams as many 90s references as it can in its fake account names and hashtags. For example, a post about inflatable furniture (AKA the most inexplicable furniture trend of the century) includes nods to A Goofy Movie and the Spice Girls:

A Blockbuster pic is also a tribute to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

And a collection of VHS tapes is a dream for a certain kid who is, ahem, Home Alone.
