How To Try The Glitter Tears Trend At Home

In 2015 we saw a whole host of experimentation in the realm of beauty, with a specific emphasis on glitter beauty trends. Particular looks that caused a stir were festive glitter lips and a huge host of sparkling body hair trends including: the kooky yet cool glitter pits, the wacky glitter beard trend, and who could forget the insanely popular glitter roots trend? Now, as we're well into 2016, glitter seems to be staying put as one of our favorite beauty tools, as folks have started to flaunt glitter tears.

According to The Daily Mail, a plethora of people rocked glitter tears on Valentine's Day, "The trend saw a surge in popularity on Valentine's Day, as unlucky-in-love singles expressed their heart-ache at being alone." This is truly sad news — personally I'm not a fan of the idea that this gorgeous trend is said to be popularized by single people on Valentine's Day, as it makes me feel sad that this commercialized "holiday" has the ability to make people feel inadequate, unloved, or question their self-worth.

Although I'm not a fan of the way in which this trend has manifested, I do have a weakness for glitter and I love the fact that this trend gives the wearer an enchantingly ethereal vibe. So if you wish to channel a fairy queen or a mermaid princess IRL, here's how you can add a touch of whimsy to your look with gorgeous glitter tears.

Before

As glitter tears are an eye makeup look, I prepped the rest of my face how I normally do. Therefore I moisturized, applied foundation, blush, and a little eyebrow pencil.

Step 1: Eyeshadow

I decided to go for a metallic eyeshadow which matched the gold glitter I would be applying later.

I applied some L’Oréal Paris Color Riche eyeshadow in “Nude” across the whole of my eyelid.

This formed the base for my sparkling look to come.

Step 2: Eyeliner

Next came the eyeliner. I picked a brown, felt tip style eyeliner pen: a Colorsport 24 Hour Eyeliner. I loved how easy it was to apply due to the pen-like nib.

I drew a thin line along my upper lash line and finished with a slight flick.

Due to the look being all about the glitter, I wanted my eyeshadow and eyeliner to be fairly natural and subtle, so as not to distract from the main event.

Step 3: Apply Your Glitter

I used a cheap and cheerful Technic Electric Beauty Glitter Liquid Eyeliner In "Bronze."

Before embarking on this DIY, I did some research into how to create the glitter tears trend. I discovered beauty vlogger heidicupcake who had created an awesome glitter tears tutorial inspired by Jeffree Star. During this tutorial she explains a tip on applying the glitter eyeliner underneath your bottom eyelashes. Thus, I took heidicupcake's advice and did just that.

My glitter tears were beginning to take shape!

After this, I needed to create the tear droplet with my glitter eyeliner. I had seen some dramatic glitter tears which looked epic, but I wanted to go for a more versatile style which could be worn day or night and for a variety of occasions.

I began by drawing downwards from the center of my lash line and I started to form an upside down triangle.

The end result should obviously look like you've been crying and your makeup has run down your face a little. Or that you're a celestial being who cries glitter. Either works for me!

It doesn't need to look incredibly neat or even and it can look smudged if you prefer a more dishevelled look.

Step 5: Apply Mascara

Complete this kooky look with your favorite mascara on both the top and bottom lashes as normal.

Your look is complete! All that's left to do is pull your best sad face and wait for those social media likes to come rolling in!

Happy posing!
