Why Does Anyone Care What A Wimbledon Champ Looks Like?

Never mind that Marion Bartoli just became the sixth woman in the world to win Wimbledon without dropping a single set, or that she's a certified genius. Apparently, what matters most to BBC Radio 5 commentator John Inverdale, is that the French tennis star didn't fulfill her most important duty as a woman: to look hot.

The latest sportscaster to catch the ever-contagious foot in mouth disease (which apparently goes hand-in-hand with sexist pig syndrome) felt the need to ask his BBC listeners, "Do you think Bartoli's dad told her when she was little, 'you're never going to be a looker'... you'll never be a Sharapova, so you have to be scrappy and fight?"

Of course, this ridiculous question managed to insult both Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli in one go, by suggesting that the success of either woman should have anything to do with her appearance. Unfortunately, Inverdale wasn't alone in his brutish attitude. Twitter accounts from around the world felt the need to sickeningly insult Bartoli's looks following her big win.

Inverdale quickly issued an embarrassed apology to the Wimbledon winner for his "ham-fisted" comment. “I've apologized to Marion by letter if any offence was caused and I do hope that we can leave the matter there,” he told reporters. BBC Radio 5 has already received nearly 700 complaints insisting that the commentator be reprimanded, or even removed from his post.

Meanwhile, Bartoli has remained admirably unfazed.

"It doesn't matter," she responded, "I am not blonde, yes. That is a fact. Have I dreamt about having a model contract? No. I'm sorry. But have I dreamed about winning Wimbledon? Absolutely, yes."

Does this look like a woman who cares what a bunch of Twitter trolls have to say?
