'The Hot Chick' Is Actually Pretty Hilarious

by Mary Grace Garis

There was a weird and wondrous time in America when Rob Schneider was releasing body swap comedies every week, but among most of those travesties shines The Hot Chick. You probably vaguely remember The Hot Chick as the film starring Rachel McAdams pre-Mean Girls, about like 30 seconds before she got stupendously famous. What you probably don't remember is that in brief, shining moments it can be pretty hilarious.

Which isn't to say The Hot Chick is necessarily a good film — Roger Ebert famously gave it half a star and very nearly walked out of the theater — and lord knows it has it's share of problematic humor that wouldn't hold up as well in a post-Tumblr world. But there are some definite redeeming qualities: It teaches you the meaning of horticulture. It teaches you how to get frappucinos for free. It features a young Anna Faris, and who's more delightful than Anna Faris? And did I mention that Rachel McAdams is in it?

So yeah, overall The Hot Chick is sort of fun and silly and quite colorful (like, literally, from an aesthetic point of view). Don't believe me? Here are some of the more delightful moments from the top tier Schneider swap film, The Hot Chick.

1. When Jessica Wakes Up And Finds Out That Her Boobs Have Magically Disappeared

Oh, and that she's in the body of a 30-something-year-old gas station attendant, but the first part is more traumatizing to me, to be honest.

2. When Jessica Wakes Up Her The Best Friend The Same Way I Do Every Morning

She asserts that I am also beautiful... on the inside.

3. When Jessica Tries to Make Amends With Hildenburg

As it turns out, Hildenburg does know the struggles of hair removal (pro-tip from a Greek girl: bleach is your best friend if you get lazy).

4. Basically Whenever Jessica's Scene-Stealing Little Brother Is Present To Bring In A Sentimental Moment... In High Heels

He is the true gender norm-challenging hero in this entire thing.

5. When The Gas Attendant Is Confronted With The Everyday Struggles Of Womanhood

McAdams plays this one off with such a tone of "this is incredulous" in her voice, which is brilliant.

6. When Jessica Tries To Seduce Her Way Into Getting An Iced Coffee

Spoiler Alert: This is not as effective as it was the first time around. I know, it sounds crazy...

7. When Jessica Goes HAM During A Sleepover Pillow Fight

There were no survivors (um, no, everyone ends up fine despite being unceremoniously slammed against the walls).

8. When I Can’t Even Imagine These Dance Moves Going Well Even If She Was Still "A Hot Chick"

It's pretty cringe-worthy either way.

9. When This Is Such A Bad Diss It’s Probably The Best Diss Of All Time?

Nailed it.

10. Virtually Any Disastrous Time Jessica Tries to Talk To Billy

Suffice it to say, her pajama game is really what makes this particular phone call special.

11. And Of Course, Whenever This Beautiful Hand Game Comes To Fruition, So To Speak

OK, maybe it's not hilarious, but it remains the most iconic hand games in the history of modern cinema. So there's that.

So, yeah, I could agree with Ebert in saying that The Hot Chick is certainly no Citizen Kane, but I dare you to watch it again and not get at least a few giggles in.
