Trends From The '90s That Will Be Big In 2016

by Julia Musto

It's no secret, the '90s trends have been back in style for a while now. This nostalgic resurgence was perhaps spurred by the success of Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" music video in 2014. However, since then, '90s trends have popped up all over on American style icons. This decade isn't going anywhere!

I never thought I'd see another choker in my life, but here we are. Although I have to admit that they have certainly gotten an upgrade since the plastic stretchy woven loops from lower school. Calvin Klein underwear, too, is back with a vengeance (although, let's be real, that never went out of style) complete with an amazing celebrity advertising campaign (hi Justin Bieber's abs). Even overalls and Doc Martens have stomped their way back onto the streets of Los Angeles, NYC, and everywhere in between.

I guess it is time to accept the inevitable: fashion is recycled and history will repeat itself. The question is now, what '90s trends should you have in your arsenal for the next year? Although it is hard to even think about spring in New York City right now, at some point jean mini skirts with Rihanna's new platform creepers are going to be a summer concert staple. Maybe you can even pair that with a band tee and a flannel tied around your waist. Very retro!

'Til then, here are a few of the trends you can try now!

1. Your Calvins

I was a little surprised to be met with the Biebs and his six pack while walking home from the gym one day, but long story short, visible Calvin Klein underwear is hot hot hot in 2016.

2. Doc Martens

Look what's back! Meg Cabot's princess's favorite boots! And, on Gwen Stefani, no doubt.

3. Flannel

I have always been a big fan of flannels. In the winter they're another layer, and in the summer they are like a light sweater. Everybody wins!

Try Roxy Driftwood Flannel Shirt, $49.50, Amazon

4. Jean Mini Skirts

Every girl you wanted to be on TV growing up wore one of these with black Converse. They were also very transitional day-to-night pieces. I wanted one for like ten years, and now is my chance.

Try True Religion Mini Denim Skirt, $89.99, Amazon

5. Floral Skater Dresses

This is so Alicia Silverstone.

6. Brown Lips

Both Kardashian and Jenner sisters love this trend. I wonder if Kim K wears True Brown K now!

Try NYX Slim Lip Liner in Ever, $9.45, Amazon

7. Jellies

Jellies are the perfect summer sandals. Personally, I think they look cooler than they, feel but beauty is pain, right?

Try Rebecca Minkoff Jana Jelly Sandal, $90, Amazon

8. Round Sunnies

If you're a PLL fan, you'll know that these are a Shay Mitchell staple. I have the face for square frames, but think these are very cool looking.

Try Carrera Round Plastic Sunglasses, $42.99, Amazon

9. Platform Shoes

The Fenty x Puma collection from NYFW has made certain that platform shoes and creepers will have a place in fashion for at least the next year.

Try Puma Classic Platform Sneaker, $59, Amazon

10. Crop Tops

Crop tops are no secret now, but they are continuing to rule the style scene, along with high-wasted pants, in 2016.

Try For Love & Lemons Chica Crop Top, $92, Amazon

11. Mom Jeans

Got any old, baggy high-waisted jeans you can distress? If so, you're good to go.

Accent braids will always add dimension to straight or slightly wavy hair. Look at Blake Lively rocking them.
