Here's How To Choose The Right Sunscreen

by Alexa Dragoumis

While we all enjoy a nice bronze (especially after a long winter), it's important to make sure you're properly protected for some fun in the sun. Of course, anything we put on our skin has potential to cause a reaction just like a face cream or fragrance, so that's why I'm here to break down how to choose the best sunscreen for your skin. Let's be honest — there is nothing worse than having a bad reaction to something that is designed to protect your skin, right?

The most important thing to do is identify what skin type you have. As someone with incredibly sensitive skin, I understand the struggle choosing the right product can present. From eczema to breakouts, I've had my fair share of poor reactions to sunscreen products in the past. You'd think that with so many choices on the shelf, it wouldn't be that hard to find the right thing, but in fact, the number of choices can sometimes feel overwhelming! While reading the ingredients on the label may feel like a chore, it's good practice to know what you're putting on your skin.

The good news is, you don't always have to pay a premium price for a good sunscreen, you just have to know what to look for. So, as I'm walking you through the best sunscreen for each skin type, make sure to pay attention to the key ingredients of the ones that apply to you!

So, before you run to the drugstore, check out this list to see if any of these skin types apply to you.

1. If You Have Sensitive Skin

Neutrogena Pure & Free Liquid Sunscreen, drugstore.com, $11.79

If you're anything like me and you're allergic to fragrance or get eczema or hives at the drop of a hat, you should look for sunscreen that has little to no chemical ingredients. In other words, look for a sunscreen has the active ingredients zinc and titanium and opt for a product that is fragrance-free and tear-free. Neutrogena is a great brand for those with sensitive skin, which is why I chose to share the above sunscreen!

2. If You Have Dry Skin

CeraVe Facial Moistuirzing Lotion SPF 30, target.com, $13.59

Since being out in the sun can make dry skin even drier, it's important to make sure that the sunscreen you choose provides lasting moisture. CeraVe makes great products for moisturizing and protecting your skin, like this AM face sunscreen.

3. If You Have Acne Prone Skin

Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen, sashing.com, $8.14

If you have skin that is prone to breakouts, the last thing you want is to add more oil to the equation. Lucky for you, there are plenty of skincare brands that provide oil-free SPFs!

4. If You Have Problems With Redness

Eucerin Redness Relief Daily Perfecting Lotion, drugstore.com, $11.39

If you have problems with rosacea or redness, first of all, be extra careful in the sun and look for a product with a high SPF. This product is formulated from licorice root extract, which has been known to help calm irritated skin, according to Paula's Choice.

5. If You Have Normal Skin

(Australian Gold Sunscreen Continuous Spray with Instant Bronzer, target.com, $8.09)

First of all, lucky you for being able to choose any sunscreen! Normal skin gives you the option to use SPF products with fun scents and even built-in bronzer. Australian Gold is great because it gives you a quick bronze while protecting your skin from harmful UV rays all at once!
