The New 'Star Trek' Reboot Needs These 11 Things

by Jennifer Still

I'll admit it — I spent many of my formative years as a bit of a Trekkie. I don't even remember how I got into Star Trek, only that Voyager was my jam and I was awe-struck and inspired by Captain Janeway and the strong women on her crew — B'Elanna Torres, Seven of Nine, Kes. I even wrote fanfic, for God's sake (I was a Janeway/Chakotay 'shipper before I really understood what 'shipping was). I dabbled in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, but after that, I fell off the wagon. Enterprise just wasn't very good, and I was disheartened (but unsurprised) that the franchise seemed to end there. Thankfully, a new Star Trek series is coming in 2017 and it has Nicholas Meyer at the helm. Can it live up to the great Treks of the past? Eh, I'm skeptical.

While I'm all for bringing Star Trek to a new generation of fans and taking advantage of all the amazing technology we have at our disposal these days, if a new series is going to proudly carry on the franchise and live up to its former glory, there are some things that just have to be included.

A Stoic But Super Compassionate Captain

Making it through Starfleet Academy into the Captain's chair is no small feat, and it requires a thick skin and brute strength inside and out. That doesn't mean the Captain should be a jerk just because he or she is a hard ass — underneath that stern demeanor should lie a serious heart of gold, even if it isn't put on display all the time.

The Borg

I know, I know, I'm sure some of you are sick of the Borg by now, but they're a Trek legend and they deserve to be kept in. After all, what's more terrifying than a race that aims to annihilate individuality for the sake of a singular hive mind. Also, look at them! They're freaky!

The Holodeck

One of my favorite things about Star Trek was the technology they had. It wasn't so much the fact that they could zoom to all these different planets as it was that they could create a whole world right there in the same room they're in. It's called the holodeck, and it is a thing of wonders. Use it well, new Trek.

Replicators

Another amazing Trek technology is the replicator. Want pancakes at 3 a.m.? Press a few buttons and voila, there they are, materialized out of thin air. Ran out of Diet Coke and desperate for a hit of that bitter, fizzy goodness? Look no further than the replicator! If only it was real.

As you can see, my requirements are fairly simple and not all that extensive. What can I say? I'm easy to please. Get on it, then, Star Trek!
