How The 'Fuller House' Fashion Got An Upgrade

by Kali Borovic

Fuller House is finally here, and if there's anything better than (almost) the entire cast being together again, it's the major fashion upgrade the characters received. According to Fashionista, costume designer Mary Kate Killilea had a plan to help the entire Tanner family get trendier (yes, even Michelle *crying face emoji*). These Fuller House style transformations are so good that you'll almost forget about all the '90s styles that the family sported the first time around.

I won't lie, when the news of a Full House reboot was announced, my first thought was about what the characters would wear. It's not easy going from stand-out '90s fashions to modern day ensembles, but somehow Killilea pulled it off. With D.J. now the head of the household and Stephanie and Kimmy by her side, they were the ones to get the biggest fashion upgrade, which Danny, Uncle Jesse, and Uncle Joey's style has stayed more in the past. Killilea told Fashionista that "they wanted to be realistic" with the wardrobes, which makes sense considering the girls are now the main focus.

D.J.'s clearly the trendy mom, while Stephanie (who is now a DJ) sticks to her '90s roots. To no surprise, Kimmy's clothing is without a doubt the quirkiest of the bunch. The costume designer even had big plans for Michelle to be a fashionista, which obviously didn't come to pass when the Olsen Twins decided not to come back for the show.

There are a lot of things that stayed the same about the Tanner family — their endless hugs, ridiculous jokes, and even their home — but their style did a total 180. Just look at how much the family has changed!

1. D.J. Tanner

Before:

D.J. was all about the denim on denim, headbands, and bold patterns in her teen years.

After:

She might be a mom now, but she's as trendy as ever. "[D.J.] is a modern mom and that's pretty much where we went with her," Killilea told Fashionista. "She definitely has this great sense of style, which is completely what I've stolen from Candace [Cameron Bure]."

2. Danny Tanner

Before:

Danny was a working dad and mainly dressed in button downs and ties.

After:

His style didn't change much, he just lost the tie.

3. Stephanie Tanner

Before:

The true '90s child that she is, Stephanie's style consisted of minimal belly-bearing and simple yet trendy '90s looks.

After:

Because she's a DJ now, she wears riskier looks that are still loosely based on '90s fashion. "Some of Stephanie's stuff is a throwback to these festivals that are also very common now, [like] Coachella, but back then it was Lollapalooza... " Killilea told Fashionista.

4. Uncle Jesse

Before:

This cool uncle and Elvis Presley enthusiast was a fan of dark colors, leather, and slicked back hair.

After:

To be honest, Uncle Jesse didn't change much. He even wears some of his own '90s throwback clothing on set. According to Fashionista, the jacket he wore in the Fuller House pilot was the same one he wore on the first episode of Full House.

5. Kimmy Gibbler

Before:

It doesn't get more '90s than Kimmy's outfits. Bold patterns and quirky colors were this girl's specialty.

After:

Gibbler is now a party planner and dresses even quirkier than ever, but it's strategic now, according to Fashionista. "One of the big things: When she was a kid doing 'Full House,' Kimmy kind of was the butt of the joke a lot and we didn't want the joke to be at the expense of her and that was the big difference [in her costumes]," Killilea told Fashionista.

6. Uncle Joey

Before:

Track suits and cardigans are what this comedian rocked the most.

After:

He keeps it pretty simple now, as far as style goes. He does have one of the same accessories, though — his Mr. Beaver hand puppet.

7. Michelle Tanner

Before:

The slogan-spewing tot stuck to jumpers and adorable little dresses.

After:

The twins might not be on the show, but the characters still reference Michelle. They say that she's in New York building her fashion empire. In fact, they even give D.J.'s daughter an Elizabeth and James dress for her birthday in one of the episodes!

It's great to see the original Full House cast back and better than ever.
