Look, I know I'm technically a Grown Ass Woman (TM) who is definitely older than 19-year-old Rey in Star Wars, but that has not by any means stopped me from wanting to be her when I grow up. If you're in the same boat and you're as terrible at cosplay as I am, then never fear, because you can still try to emulate our fave by learning how to make Rey's ration bread. Created by Jenn Fujikawa of Just Jenn Recipes, the IRL version gets its similar green hue not from whatever semi-questionable ingredients Unkar Plutt is dealing out, but rather from matcha and all kinds of yummy things that still give it that same awesome instant baking effect. Plus, let's be real. Blatant nerdery aside, you never need an excuse to make a delicious mug cake.
And while we're on the topic of Rey's ration bread, a bit of a fun fact: the bread used in the movie was not created using special effects. Special effects supervisor Chris Corbould spoke to MTV News about how the few seconds we see the bread in the film were actually the result of months of hard work.
"You wouldn’t believe how long it took to actually perfect that one, that little tiny gag in the film,” Corbould told MTV News. “It started off with the mechanics of getting the bread to rise and the liquid to disappear, but then there was the ongoing problem of what color should the bread be? What consistency should it be? Should it have cracks in it? Should it not have cracks in it?”
Fortunately, the Just Jenn Recipes version will not cause you nearly as much strife (and will taste a heck of a lot better to boot).
