11 Celebrity Tats That Will Confuse You

by Julia Musto

It almost seems like a rule that every celebrity tattoo is going to be confusing to followers and fans. Most of the time the population is apt to wonder, "You know that's forever, right?" Perhaps it's because I don't actually know my favorite celebrities personally, but whenever an idol of mine gets some new ink I wind up shaking my head in disbelief.

However, discovering the meaning of a celebrity's tattoo can feel like a deeper connection to who they really are. Additionally, many celebrities go to the same artists, giving fans an inside look at their lives — and a way to possibly get similar body art. For example New York City local tattoo artist Bang Bang has inked everyone from Justin Bieber to Selena Gomez. I'm betting there are some great stories there.

For some tattoos are just art, but for others they are reminders of who they are and have been. According to Cosmo, Demi Lovato's tattoos encouraged her to be strong while recovering from eating disorders and depression. You can't help but admire those.

Yet, many tattoos seen on the red carpet are just downright frustrating. Why would you get your own name tattooed on the nape of your neck? Here are a few tattoos that have confused celeb-lovers over the years.

1. Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber has so many tattoos now that MTV made you a map. This tattoo reads "Patience" and many believe it is ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez inspired, but there is no freaking proof!

2. Demi Lovato

According to Cosmo, Lovato's tattoos represent her faith, her friendships, her relationship with her father and her fans, and her struggle with abuse in different ways. However, there is one that is completely unexplained: a small script "Peace" on her finger. Also, #TBT to when she had long red hair.

4. Adam Levine

According to The Cut, the illegible works on his right bicep apparently mean nothing? Oh, and don't even ask him about his Eagle tat.

5. Rihanna

Rihanna's stars are cool, but why are they cool? They seem like one of those designs people would stencil on t-shirts.

6. Adele

Adele caused a media frenzy when an image of her "Paradise" tattoo was released in 2013. Coincidentally, it was the same word in the same placement as a tattoo on singer Lana de Rey. Oops?

7. Zac Efron

Zac Efron had YOLO tatted on his right hand. I don't even know what to say. Too many party movies, Efron?

8. Mary J. Blige

Mary J. Blige has her own name on her right arm, which must be nice to look at while getting swole in the gym mirror.

9. Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore's "BREATHE" tattoo is very practical and all, but would I want that on my body forever? Maybe not.

10. Megan Fox

Megan Fox's shoulder blade tattoo is a quote from King Lear. It reads, "We Will All Laugh at Gilded Butterflies." Not quite sure why.

11. Gucci Mane

I cannot make this stuff up. Gucci Mane has an ice cream cone and the word "brr" on his cheek. According to CNN, in 2011, a source told a Rolling Stone reporter that that tat is a reminder of how Mane lives his life: "Cool as ice. As in "'I'm so icy, I'll make ya say Brr.'" Mr. Mane, is it chocolate or vanilla?

Think before you ink, ladies!
