How To Wear A Choker Like An It Girl

by Eliza Florendo

The '90s are back and in full swing, and we're not just talking about the ubiquitous flannels and mom jeans that are taking up every inch of New York City. No — we're talking about chokers paired with off-the-shoulder tops. While some of our favorites from our childhood included jelly chokers and furry ones, too, now that we've grown up (sort of), they've taken a super chic turn. The best way to rock them like an adult, super cool It girl? Showing off your shoulders, à la Kendall Jenner and Katy Perry.

Maybe it's the unexpected look of a collar with bare shoulders. Maybe it's just that it looks super badass and cool. Whatever it is, the combo is totally taking over every fashionable metropolitan area. Shoulders are having a moment, y'all, and an edgy choker complements them perfectly. The mix of elegant, bare shoulders and a hard, tough choker is the fashion dichotomy we've been waiting for.

And with so many choker options out there, the world is a literal necklace playground. You've got plain leather ones, metal cuffs, braided ties, and even beaded chokers. The possibilities are literally endless, and there's one for each and every mood you're going for. Want to go with all black, everything? There's a choker for that. Or feeling rather boho chic today? Don't worry — stacked beaded chokers are a thing.

How cool does Jurnee Smollett-Bell look in this little ensemble? A mix of elegant, badass, and totally cool, she's definitely a stunner on that red carpet.
