7 Ways To Channel Your Inner Hermione

by Sadie Trombetta

When you find yourself in a tough spot, do you ask, "What would my mom do?", "What would Beyoncé do?", or do you look to someone else entirely? For me, the answer is always the same, which is why whenever I'm in a pinch, I try to channel my inner Hermione. What can I say, the girl always knows what to do.

There are so many different ladies of literature I look to for inspiration, but no one is quite like Hermione Granger. No matter what's thrown her way, whether it's end of year O.W.L. exams, a three-headed dog, or a feuding friends, Hermione handles each problem with grace and dignity. She has the cleverness, the guts, and the heart to make it through any situation, and come out stronger on the other side. No matter how much pressure she is under, no matter how hurt or upset she is, and no matter who or what is threatening her, Hermione is always cool, calm, and collected. Now, if that's not the kind of person you want to look to during your own life's tough times, I don't know who is.

Whether you're prepping for a big interview, studying for an exam, or dealing with personal problems, here are 7 ways to channel your inner Hermione. Just remember, if she can handle anything, so can you.

1. Read More Books

Hermione is a smart and clever girl, thanks to her love of the library. If you want to awaken your own inner Hermione, picking up a book is a great place to start. Study more, visit your library often, and don't be afraid to get lost in a good book. It's what Hermione would want.

2. Always Put Your Loved Ones First

When it comes to her friends and family, Hermione is selfless and loyal, almost to a fault. She's willing to sacrifice her own happiness, and even her own life, for the ones she loves. If you find yourself in a tough spot between what's best for you and what's best for someone you love, just ask yourself, "What would Hermione do?" Chances are, the answer is whatever is best for the one you love, even if that means you don't get what you want. Trust Hermione, it's always the right thing to do.

3. Raise Your Hand, High

Literally and figuratively, that is. Whether it's a class discussion, a workplace meeting, or an open town hall discussion, don't be afraid to make your voice heard. Your opinions, your answers, and your voice matter. The next time you second guess that, just think of all the times Hermione rose her own hand, and you'll be inspired to do the same.

4. Be Over Prepared, Not Under Prepared

Year end exam, interview for a new job, weekend camping trip — no matter where you are going or what you are doing, channel Hermione's preparedness and don't be afraid to over do it. You never know what you'll need until you need it, and if you've over prepared, chances are you'll be okay.

5. Be Honest With Your Friends

It can be hard to be honest with people you care about when you know the truth might hurt them, but honesty is the best policy, and not just because it is Hermione's policy. If your friend is acting foolishly, tell them. when they ask for your opinion about something, don't sugarcoat it — just be clear and straight forward, and you'll both feel better in the end. Trust me, it's what Hermione would do.

6. Speak Out Against Injustice

Hermione and the actress who plays her, Emma Watson, have a lot in common, but perhaps their best shared quality is their passion for activism. From Hermione's S.P.E.W. to Watson's #HeForShe campaign, both women set great examples, and we should all try and channel their inner activism. If we don't speak up, act out, and try and make a difference, who will?

7. Take Risks

Sure, when we first met Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, she wasn't the kind of girl to toe the line, let alone step over it entirely, but during her time at Hogwarts, Hermione learned the importance of taking risks. Channel your inner Hermione and don't be afraid to try something new, go somewhere you've never been, or apply to that job you've always wanted. You never know what will happen outside of your comfort zone.
