Are Ryan & Emma In For The 2017 Oscars?

by Michelle Lulic

Move over, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. It could finally be time for Hollywood's next co-star couple to take on award season together. With the pushed release of Damien Chazelle's film La La Land from it's original July 15 date to a nationwide December 16 release, the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone-starring musical is now coming out smack dab in the middle of the 2016-2017 award season. Which means that, despite the film being a musical, the chance is still very much alive: 2017 could be the year that Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone win an Oscar.

The pushed back release date makes La La Land a possible shoe-in for not only the Golden Globe comedy and musical film category, but also for the 2017 Oscars. And, with the award season track record following the film's stars — Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and J.K. Simmons — and even the film's director — Damien Chazelle — I'd say this release date switch wasn't done without cause. However, aside from the possibilities of the film's overall success, the film's two stars are the ones who are really on my mind. Obviously, the chances of the same filming winning both the Best Actor and Best Actress categories can't be very high. But will both of these previously nominated stars be taking on award season with yet another nomination? It is now definitely a possibility, assuming that film lives up to its expectations.

La La Land is said to act as a love story for both of their two characters — Sebastian and Mia — and for the city of Los Angeles. It follows a jazz pianist and aspiring actress as they fall for each other and travel on the journey towards their dreams along the way. Basically, this film is going to be heartwarming, beautiful, and everything you would probably expect out of those two. And we know the chemistry is going to be on fleek. After all, we've have seen the pair fall in love with each other before in both the 2013 film Gangster Squad and 2011's Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Although neither of those movies received them Oscar nods, La La Land still has a fighting chance. Aside from the film's perfectly timed release date, another factor fans have backing the film is Damien Chazelle. His 2014 film, Whiplash , shocked the 2015 award season with Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Writing of an Adapted Screenplay. Whiplash also took home Oscars for Sound Mixing, Film Editing, and J.K. Simmons (who is also expected to appear in La La Land) took home the award for Best Supporting Actor. So, essentially, La La Land puts the Damien Chazelle and J.K. Simmons team in the eyes of Oscar voters again, alongside previously nominated actors Ryan Gosling (recently appeared in The Big Short and was nominated for Best Actor in 2006's Half Nelson) and Emma Stone (was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2014's Birdman). It could be the birth of an all-new David O. Russell-styled team.

Now that Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson gotten receiving their first Oscar statues out of the way, it's time for these un-awarded talents to get there's as well. Now we'll just have to wait until December to see if La La Land can live up to all of my expectations.
