The One Thing To Never Do To Your Hair

by Augusta Statz

No matter how hard you try, your beauty routine is likely damaging your hair in some way, shape, or form. And that goes for everyone. So you’ve got your washing routine down, your heat protectant is on — what more could you possibly be doing to protect your hair? Well, the one thing you should never do to your hair may surprise you, because it’s likely something you do quite frequently.

According to Cosmopolitan, you should not go to bed with your hair wet — which I did just last night. But don't worry; we've all made this mistake. Wet hair is easy to break, and all of that tossing and turning you do at night could be causing your hair to pull and tear.

If you thought you had your hair routine just right, that may not necessarily be the case. What’s one more preventative measure to add to the already long list of must-dos for gorgeous hair? Besides, this one really is worth it in the end, and it doesn't have to rule out showering at night altogether. Just wait until your hair is only slightly damp before letting your head hit the pillow. If you do this, your hair will thank you in the best way possible — by staying healthy, full and gorgeous. If you do go to bed after a night shower, here are some things you can do to prevent breakage.

1. Make Sure Your Hair Is As Dry As Possible

So that you don't have to quit showering at night entirely, just make sure you do so while leaving enough time for your hair to dry a little before heading to bed. Being rough on the hair while it's too wet can cause it to break, so avoid sleeping with sopping wet hair as much as possible.

2. Don't Skip The Product

According to Birchbox, skipping the product can lead to frizzing while you sleep, so don't think you can not put in any product just because you're not styling your hair for the day.

3. Style It, But Not Too Tight

Sleeping in a braid or another type of hairstyle can help you not take a toll on your hair during the night, but be sure not to pull the hair up too tightly, because that can cause damage as well.

4. Sleep On A Silk Pillowcase

Silk is more gentle on the hair, and allows for more movement and less friction than you find with cotton pillowcases.

5. Wrap Your Hair In A Scarf

Wrapping your hair up in a scarf is a great option for keeping it intact if you don't have a silk pillowcase, or if you're trying to make sure your hair is as tidy as possible come morning.

Just be patient and make sure your hair is pretty dry before ever hitting the hay. Then, find yourself saying "Good morning" to healthier hair.
