17 Times The Spice Girls influenced '90s Fashion

by Katharine McEntee

It might be 2016, but when it comes to fashion, us Millennials are all about the 1990s. While I am not quite sure what started our rampant nostalgia, I think it might have something do with the Spice Girls' fashion choices. That's right: The Spice Girls were not only one of the most popular bands of the '90s, but they were also the biggest trendsetters of the era. From platform shoes to chokers to slip dresses, these girl band members were the epitome of the decade's style, and Gen Y-ers still can’t get enough.

Long before Olivia Palermo was sporting platform sneakers, Baby Spice donned them on the red carpet. And well before Gigi Hadid was wearing her Adidas around town, Sporty Spice was rocking the brand’s tracksuit. Needless to say, the Spice Girls were way ahead of their time when it came to all things sartorial. From Posh’s straight hair and all-black attire to Scary Spice’s jumpsuits, these women not only influenced the fashion of the '90s, but arguably continue to influence our fashion today.

If you are a fan of the '90s revival, scroll down to see the 17 major trends that the Spice Girls started in the naughties. What are you waiting for? Spice up your life!

1. The LBD

I'm almost positive Posh is the reason for the LBD.

2. Platforms

Platform heels, boots, sneakers: You name it, they wore it.

3. Overalls

Once again, the Spice Girls could be seen sporting one of the hottest trends of the '90s: overalls.

4. Thigh-High Slits

Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice) might just be responsible for the boom of sky-high slits in the '90s.

5. Scrunchies

I love me some '90s nostalgia, but here's hoping scrunchies don't make a total comeback.

6. Slip Dresses

I'm not quite sure who made slip dresses cool first, Kate Moss or the Spice Girls. But one thing's for sure: They were all the rage in the '90s.

7. Tracksuits

All of the cool kids wore tracksuits in the '90s and Sporty Spice happened to be one of them.

8. Barely Buttoned Blouses

Yep, that's right: Oversized blouses revealing the navel were a thing in the '90s, too.

9. Up-Dos

The Spice Girls were fans of many whimsical up-dos. Needless to say, I wore pigtails a lot in the '90s.

10. Pop Of Color

While the '90s might have been a time of grunge, the Spice Girls lightened it up with blue eyeshadow and eye popping minis.

11. Menswear Jackets

Short skirts and long jackets, preferably leather, were a '90s must.

12. Ankle Strap Sandals

There is so much '90s goodness in this picture, but the barely-there ankle strap sandals that Posh was wearing might just be one of my favorite semi-historical trends.

13. Sheer Tops

Sheer tops were all the rage in the '90s thanks to the Scary Spice.

14. Denim On Denim

Before Posh dared to wear denim on denim, it was a cliche. But thanks to her, it is now a fashion must.

15. Upper Arm Jewelry

The Spice Girls were rarely seen without any upper arm jewelry, be it a serpent-style bracelet or a sweatband.

16. Mini Dresses

Leave it to Victoria Beckham to sport (or launch) one of the biggest '90s trends.

17. The Leather Jacket

Posh made leather jackets the actual coolest.

So thank you, Spice Girls, for making the '90s and everything thereafter oh-so-fashionable.
