An Elektra Netflix Series Is Certainly Possible

by Molly Freeman

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown to include a dozen movies and a handful of television series, but in one small corner of this world filled with superheroes and villains we have Matt Murdock on Daredevil. In Season 1 of the Marvel Netflix series, the blind hero saved his neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen in New York City from the corrupt politician Wilson Fisk. Now, in Season 2 Matt Murdock will be crossing paths with two new characters: Punisher and Elektra. So will Elektra get her own Netflix show as a spinoff from Daredevil?

I'd say, the longer Netflix continues to expand its corner of the MCU, the better the chances of Elektra getting a spinoff. Remember, there have already been rumors of a Punisher solo series at Netflix! But, the big problem standing in the way of a show following Elektra is the fact that Netflix already has other Marvel series expected to premiere before any spinoffs; Luke Cage is arriving in September and Iron Fist recently cast Finn Jones as the hero with the show expected to premiere in the coming years according to Den of Geek. Plus, the four titular superheroes will be teaming up for The Defenders at some point, as reported by Collider, which unfortunately doesn't leave a whole lot of room for an Elektra spinoff series.

Still, that doesn't mean an Elektra spinoff is never going to happen. During the Television Critics Association 2016 winter press tour, Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos said spinoffs of Marvel Netflix characters could happen, as reported by EW: "any character that’s in there is on the table … It’s always possible. All the characters in the universe could also spin out." Although this sounds incredibly positive in terms of an Elektra series, Sarandos also denied that there had been any movement on a Punisher spinoff show despite the rumors. Although, that could have just been the secretive nature around most Marvel Studios projects.

So what are the real chances of Elektra getting her own spinoff? Honestly, it's too early to say. Although Netflix hasn't revealed their official schedule of release dates for their Marvel shows past Luke Cage, I'd guess there's very little chance of any new series arriving before Iron Fist or The Defenders. However, this guess doesn't take into account when Jessica Jones Season 2 will premiere or the fact that Netflix's plans might change depending on how well Season 2 of Daredevil is received by viewers and critics, including their response to the introductions of Punisher and Elektra.

At the very least, we do know that Elektra can stand on her own two feet since the character did headline her own movie way back in 2005 — though, according to Rotten Tomatoes, viewers didn't enjoy the Elektra film. Still, the Marvel Comics character set to appear in Daredevil is a whole new incarnation of the anti-hero, who will be played by Élodie Yung rather than Jennifer Garner, and could certainly generate enough viewer interest in the new version of Elektra to warrant a spinoff series. But, right now, we're left waiting to see what will happen.
