Funny Jokes & Memes About D.C.'s Metro Shutdown

by Lauren Holter

Tuesday night at midnight, Washington D.C.'s entire Metrorail system will shut down for at least 24 hours for emergency equipment inspections. For people without the option to work from home, the news was tragic. As commuters in the city scrambled to figure out how to get to work on Wednesday without the trusty trains, many took to Twitter to vent their frustrations through hilarious jokes and memes about D.C.'s Metrorail shutdown.

The decision to close the whole Metro system came after an electrical fire broke out in one of the tunnels Monday, leading to major delays on three train lines, according to The Washington Post. The same type of cables burned last year, filling a tunnel near L'Enfant Plaza with smoke and killing one woman. Because of the connection between the 2015 death and Monday's fire, officials called for safety checks to avoid a repeat of the fatal incident. "While the risk to the public is very low, I cannot rule out a potential life safety issue here, and that is why we must take this action immediately," Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld told the Post's Robert McCartney and Lori Aratani.

Traffic will no doubt be insane throughout D.C. Wednesday, and commuters were not looking forward to the chaos. Check out some of the funniest jokes and memes about the shutdown that will make you ecstatic to be literally anywhere else.
