Nicki Dishes On Her Relationship With Meek Mill

by Michelle McGahan

Like counting the number of rings on a tree to determine its age, Nicki Minaj isn't engaged to Meek Mill until he gifts the rapper with her third diamond ring. (It's true.) While the idea of three jaw-dropping engagement rings is only normal in the world of celebrity, Nicki Minaj did throw down some truths about relationships in general — like how important it is for a woman to have a voice and speak her mind in a relationship — in a new interview with Nylon.

Truth be told, Minaj is pretty much a die-hard advocate for speaking your mind in any scenario — it's one of the reasons why she's such a badass feminist. And being able to use your voice in a relationship in particular is crucial for making the romance last — everyone should feel like they're heard and understood by their partner and be totally comfortable in doing so.

"It's important for me to keep my voice. Being in a relationship shouldn’t mean that you lose your voice," Minaj told Nylon. "Being in a relationship should mean that you've met a secure-enough man to allow you, in a sense, to remain a queen."

The type of queen that Minaj is talking about isn't one who makes demands and just expects her partner to follow them, but one who knows her worth and her value and isn't going to compromise any of that for the sake of a guy. She is going to be the same fiercely outspoken woman that she's always been, and if a guy can get behind that and fit into her life, then cool. She's already a whole person — and that's exactly what Meek Mill loves so much about her.

"When he and I were just friends, he would always say, ‘You remind me of my mother, and I like that because you’re like a dude. You’re tough like a guy and you talk like a dude,'" Minaj recalled. "So I always got the sense that being tough and bossy and was a turn-on for him."

Besides the fact that I want to give Meek Mill a lesson in gender norms (you can be "tough like a woman," too), this is exactly everything that he should love and accept about his girlfriend (and what anyone should accept about their girlfriend, TBH). Being strong and independent and outspoken are all positive qualities, and someone who encompasses them should absolutely be praised. So shoutout to Nicki Minaj for being the badass that she is, and shoutout to Meek Mill for not only realizing this, but loving it so much about his soon-to-be fiancée.
