Nike’s Self-Lacing Shoes Are Coming

by Eliza Florendo

Alright, so we have cars that can park themselves, phones that serve as navigation systems, cameras, and clocks, and fashion programs that can even virtually dress us. But now, more absurdly, we're going to have shoes that lace themselves up: The Nike self-lacing shoes officially have a release date: this holiday season. So if you're thinking of the perfect gift for your sneaker and tech lovers, this shoe is practically perfect for them.

This shoe was first announced on Back to the Future day last October of 2015 (by the way, how cool was the fashion in that movie?), making the self-lacing shoes in the movie an actual real thing. Technology, am I right?! When I first saw that scene, I remember thinking, "No way. That won't actually be a thing for a long, long time." Turns out, I was wrong.

The shoe, called the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, looks pretty freaking cool. Basically, when you put your heel in the shoe, a sensor will be activated, and the shoe automatically tightens. Using two buttons on the sneakers, you can make them tighter or looser, according to Racked. Pretty nifty. This is probably the coolest thing in fashion tech we've seen lately, aside from the advent of the Apple watch.

Not only does it lace itself, it actually looks pretty cool, too. I've only seen iterations in black and white, but both neutrals look fly as hell. With a thicker, more supportive sole, it's also probably super comfortable. And that, I will never complain about.

And who better to try it on first than soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo himself?

Though we do know the release time, we don't know anything about pricing. Racked reports that only Nike+ members will be able to purchase these babies. So if you're looking to get your hands on them, it's time to join the (very cool) club.
