Rogen & Goldberg Team Up Again, This Time For AMC

by Lia Beck

To anyone who feared that AMC wouldn't add anymore good shows following the departure of Breaking Bad and Mad Men — okay, so maybe just executives at AMC — there is a new show on the horizon and it sounds intriguing. AMC is developing Preacher written and produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Additionally, Sam Catlin of Breaking Bad will be the show's executive producer. While it is a drama, Preacher is based on a comic and sounds much more adjacent to The Walking Dead, which is also based on a comic, than any of AMC's more traditional dramas.

Preacher will be based on the 1990s comic of the same name by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. According to AMC's official description,

Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty.

On his mission Custer is joined by his ex-girlfriend (a love story!) and a vampire (a vampire is always good to have these days). On the evil side of things is the Saint of Killers who becomes Custer's rival.

Rogen and Goldberg, childhood friends who also co-wrote Superbad and This is the End, are very excited AMC has decided to develop the show. They released a statement saying,

This is amazing! We’ve tried for seven years to work on ‘Preacher’ and we’re so psyched AMC is finally letting us. It is our favorite comic of all time, and we’re going to do everything we can to do it right. Humperdoo!

Ennis, one of the writer's of the Preacher comic shares their excitement. "Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see Preacher being developed for TV, which seems a much more natural home for the story than a two-hour movie." Ennis continued, "I’m particularly impressed that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin understand Preacher fully -- meaning they get it for what it is, not some vague approximation."

Since it has only just been announced that Preacher is being developed, there is no word yet on when it might premiere. If you're interested, be sure to keep your eye out for casting news and other filming information as it's likely to come along soon.
