9 Accessories To Get Rid Of In Your Closet, Stat

by Eliza Florendo

It's not officially spring yet, but this weather is telling us otherwise. And with the blooming season coming up, that means one thing: spring cleaning. It doesn't just go for your clothing, either. These are the accessories to toss from your wardrobe once and for all. I know, I know, things have sentimental value. Believe me, I've been there. But these will definitely simplify your life.

Every few months or so, I tell myself that I'm finally going to do a closet purge and donate and sell the pieces I no longer need. But letting go is hard. Like, I haven't worn that salmon button-up in nearly two years, but my sister got me that shirt for graduation! And that robe — it's tattered and falling apart and barely covers my butt cheeks, but I've had it since I was 10 years old! You get the picture. Bottom line is sure, everything means something to us, but do we really need to hold on to them?

Thanks to a supremely popular book called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, I've begun to really think about the value of what I have in my bedroom and home, but more specifically, in my closet. As I've grown older and have started to immerse myself fully in the professional world, I've realized that it's important to have your wardrobe staples down. Sure, those fun, statement pieces will always dress a look up, but having a general outfit and sense of style is imperative.

What does this all mean? Getting rid of those things I no longer need. And while I've pretty much nailed the art of getting rid of unnecessary clothes, it's even harder for me to let go of accessories. But these are the ones you should get rid of now.

1. Your 1,000,000 Canvas Totes

Listen, I love me a canvas bag. They're light, they're super convenient, and they can be hella cute. But raise your hand if you've got more than five of these. Yep, that's me, too. Trust me, there won't be a time when you need five of these at a time. Pick your favorites, and stick to those. The others, donate and move on.

2. The Teeny, Tiny Purse

Once upon a time (circa early 2000s), tiny purses were a thing. The smaller, the cuter. Not only are these super inconvenient (can't even fit your phone in them!), but they're also so dated. Time to toss!

3. Those Cheap Plastic Sunnies

You probably got these free sunnies at a campus event. Or a concert. Or a networking event. Wherever you got them — put them back. You know which ones I'm talking about. The black frame and neon sides. Toss! Time to invest in a real, grown-up pair.

4. Costume Jewelry

There's a reason it's called costume jewelry. It's meant for an occasion, a very special one. We all had a mardi gras bead phase, but sadly, that phase is over.

5. Rubber Bracelets

Another thing we all had! Please — I'm begging. Toss. Donate to the cause directly! But these rubber bracelets are no longer acceptable in the work environment.

6. Ratty Flip Flops

Flip flops are magical for when you're hitting up the beach or the pool. Trust me, I love them too. But that pair that you've had for ages that are chewed up, and are fraying up? Not cute.

7. Fedoras

Because it's no longer 2007, and we are not in a Jason Mraz music video.

8. Bandana Headbands

Listen, I'm not judging. I literally tossed one of these out of my closet a couple of days ago. We all had them. If you were a kid of the '90s, you had one of these babies. But sadly, it's 2016, and these are no longer acceptable as an adult.

9. Brand Emblazoned Accessories

Being covered head to toe in brands was cool in the aughts, but no more. Now, we celebrate individualism. Let your accessories follow that!

Of course, to each, their own — wear what you think works best for you! But these are definitely some accessory faux pas that I've caught myself getting stuck in. It may be hard, but it's time to part. What's that saying? "'Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all." Cherish those moments with your accessories. They made you who you are. But you have to let go of them sometime, and put on your new persona.
