What Does Ariana Grande's Bunny Mask Mean?

by Vannessa Jackson

Since her first album debuted in 2013, Ariana Grande has had her fair share of strange antics, cryptic tweets, and controversies, but the mystery of her Dangerous Woman bunny mask may be the strangest yet. Grande's newest album, which she is in the process of promoting, is rumored to be her best yet. (It will definitely be her most anticipated, that's for sure.) Along with two new singles ("Dangerous Woman" and "Be Alright"), the singer also tweeted out the album cover, which happens to be Grande with a rather strange get-up. While it is a very cool image, I doubt that I'm alone in wondering what Grande's bunny mask means.

The star recently changed the name of her album from Moonlight to Dangerous Woman in an effort to promote a stronger message of female empowerment. She told Billboard, “I want to be empowering my fans. I feel like my personal growth is reflected in the sound. I’m really proud of it… To me, a dangerous woman is someone who’s not afraid to take a stand, be herself and to be honest.” Well, she has definitely set the tone with this new album cover, which is very reminiscent of old school Batman, and in my mind, it could very well allude to Grande being something of a superhero or vigilante.

Grande hasn't explained the mask, but there is some evidence to back up my superhero theory. What if "Dangerous Woman" is along the lines of Beyoncé revealing that Sasha Fierce was her alter ego? World famous pop star by day, vigilante protecting the world by night? I'd say that it's entirely possible. And even if the superhero theme isn't the full story, I'd wager that Grande is using this mask and the vigilante vibes to encourage her fans to take charge and be their own people.

Hopefully the mystery and reasoning behind the bunny mask will soon be revealed (also, please don't let this become a terrifying trend that spurs people to don bunny masks all over the place). But no matter what the mask means, I think it's clear that Grande is using her album to make a strong message about women's empowerment and strength, and for that, Dangerous Woman is an album that I am really looking forward to this year.
