Will Meredith Vieira Replace Katie Couric on Daytime?

by Kate Ward

Meredith Vieira already replaced Katie Couric on Today, but will the former morning show host replace Couric on daytime TV as well? On Tuesday, NBC announced it would be launching a new talk show starring Vieira, who was previously seen on television on Today and hosting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. The series, which will be titled The Meredith Vieira Show, will bow in 2014.

Said Vieira in a release, "Each day, I hope to accomplish what I call the three H’s: Heat, Heart and Humor. And speaking of the heart, I want to thank my husband, Richard, and kids, Ben, Gabe and Lily for strongly encouraging me to take this incredible opportunity… or else they really just want to get me out of the house."

Vieira left Today in 2011 in order to spend more time with her family and husband Richard Cohen, who suffers from multiple sclerosis. Her departure sent Today into a tailspin, with remaining host Matt Lauer fielding public relations and commercial setbacks following dwindling ratings and the very public firing of Ann Curry.

The news of Vieira's talk show comes on the heels of a 2012 that was filled with celebrity talk show debuts — and failures. Jeff Probst and Ricki Lake saw their shows canceled, while The Steve Harvey Show and Katie thrived. Until recently — this summer, rumors have been circulating that ratings trouble and staff turnover could force the ABC daytime series off the air in the next year.

What still remains to be seen: How the women will stack up against Kris Jenner.
