The One Blowdrying Trick You Need To Know

by Alexa Dragoumis

If you're wondering how to copy Alessandra Ambrosio's perfectly textured bob, you're in the right place! Believe it or not, the best way to achieve her look is by using the one blowdrying trick you've probably never tried: the brushless blowout.

Most of us — including straight-haired gals — have some wave to our hair when we just step out of the shower. The brushless blowout takes advantage of that texture. By resisting the urge to comb through your wet hair, you can actually force your hair to dry with wave to it. So, when you get out of the shower, do not brush!

The idea is to create texture and those enviable California girl-tousled waves. All you need for this look is a hairdryer, a blowout cream, and a texturizing spray. I've tried this technique and it works amazingly well and will even give fine hair lots of volume. One of the secrets to this trick actually begins with how you wash your hair, so I'm going to walk you through exactly how I did it from start to finish.

But first, to give you a little inspiration to try it, this is what we're going for:

I'd like to personally thank Ambrosio for showing us that girls with short hair can have sexy beach waves, too!

Here's how to copy the look:

1. Use Conditioner First

Yes, you are reading that correctly! When creating a tousled look, you want to avoid residue from conditioner weighing down your hair — especially if your hair is straight. By using your shampoo second, it'll leave your hair a little less silky, which is a good thing for creating texture. In fact, there are shampoos, like Bumble and Bumble's Surf Foam Wash Shampoo, that were made for creating texture.

2. Do Not Brush Your Hair

As much as this goes against everything you've ever learned, resist the urge to brush your hair when you step out of the shower. If you really can't stay away from the brush, use a wide toothed comb in the shower as you're washing, but once you step out, don't touch it!

3. Scrunch The Blowout Cream Through Your Locks

Take a dime sized amount of a strong-hold blowout cream and scrunch it through your hair. It doesn't have to be perfectly distributed — it's just there to help you hold the texture of your wet hair.

4. Begin Blowdrying On The Warm Setting

Use the warm setting instead of the hot setting. Too much heat will force the waves to straighten. When you finish blowdrying, press the cool button and quickly finish with the cool setting. This will help the style set and last longer.

5. Finish With A Texturizing Spray

To help give your hair that piecey look like Ambrosio's, finish with a texturizing sea-salt spray. Personally, I love Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Spray because it has a yummy coconut scent and it's easy to find at your local drugstore.

Remember, a little bit goes a long way, so use it sparingly. Too much will cause your hair to feel sticky and look greasy.
