Miley Just Made This Kid's Year

by Emma Goddard

Despite the fact that it’s only February and we have yet to make it through the ordeal that is Valentine’s Day, prom spirit is already in the air and it involves Miley Cyrus.

In January, high school student Matt Peterson posted video on YouTube that went viral. The prom-posal video was meant for Cyrus and featured Peterson sticking out his tongue and standing naked with only a foam finger covering his man parts. Although Cyrus took some time to think about this — because this is a pretty big decision after all — she finally responded to Peterson’s video on Twitter on Saturday.

And while the 21-year-old singer came in like a wrecking ball and refused Peterson's offer, she didn't let him down. “Dear Matt Peterson, I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to prom BUT why don’t you come to my AZ show & hang w me? Don’t forget a corsage,” Cyrus tweeted.

I’m sure Peterson is probably hyperventilating right now because I know I am. As a Smiler, I would be down to twerk all night at a Bangerz concert. Prom? What’s that? After Cyrus tweeted at Peterson, he responded with extreme excitement (as anyone would), saying, “I need a tounge [sic] tuxedo made by the 27th. THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE!!! #mileyprom.” We think he meant “tongue,” but we’ll let that one slide.

But it didn’t stop there. Cyrus responded with “PuHlEaSe” accompanied by some emojis.

Peterson, who now has over 7000 followers on Twitter thanks to his prom-posal video, has also received a great show of support by other (most likely jealous) Cyrus fans. The fact that Cyrus responded at all, let alone invited Peterson to meet her at her concert, just proves how great she is to her devotees. So, go home, Miley-haters.

Peterson is especially lucky considering his celebrity prom invite was just one of many. These celeb prom-posals are plentiful, but it’s rare for most celebrities to even respond, let alone attend a student’s high school dance.

Yet when a celebrity does do a good deed for a fan as Cyrus and a handful of prom-posal recipients before her have done, we all cheer them on because they have proven that they’re not too famous to hang out with us commoners for an hour or two.

In 2013, Dwyane Wade, an NBA for the Miami Heat, received an invite from Nicole Muxo to attend her senior prom. The basketball player called Muxo to tell her he could not attend but to have a fun night, later surprising her at her school by walking into the prom moments later.

Also that year, Jake Davidson, a high school student in Los Angeles, made a video asking Kate Upton if he could do the honor of taking her to prom. The model responded by saying she would check to see if she was free, but ended up turning him down, claiming there was a scheduling conflict, as she would be filming for a movie. Instead, Danish supermodel Nina Agdal stepped in to take Upton’s place, making it a “once-in-a-lifetime experience,” according to Davidson.

While Peterson may not have the chance to introduce Cyrus to his friends at prom like the people in other celeb-prom success stories, at least he can say he still had the opportunity to dance with her. Plus, who can brag that Miley Cyrus invited them anywhere? It’s probably not even necessary for me to say this considering we all know he will, but have fun, Peterson! It’s your party and you can do what you want.
