Harper Lee Wrote A Letter About Trump & It's Great

The late, great Harper Lee is still finding ways to make us laugh and cheer even after her death on February 19 of this year. Writing to her friend Doris Leapard in 1990, Harper Lee's letter about Donald Trump slams his Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City after she had a less-than-satisfactory (to say the least) stay there. Lee's Trump letter will be auctioned off as part of a collection on March 31, allowing the beloved author to take one final jab at the Republican presidential candidate, even after she has passed away.

Trump opened the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City the year Lee visited, in 1990. After falling into bankruptcy, the hotel was taken over earlier this year by billionaire Carl Icahn. In the letter, Lee seems to have foretold that the hotel was doomed under Trump. As she tells her friend Leapard, quoting from Edward VIII’s abdication speech in 1936, according to The Guardian:

At last I am able to say a few words ... (and I wish they were coming from Windsor Castle). The last set of Visitors departed today: the worst punishment God could devise for this sinner is to make her spirit reside eternally at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.

Lee got the last laugh though (and a big one from all of us after reading that letter). She was laid to rest in her iconic, beloved hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, the basis for the setting of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Hopefully now, the reclusive Lee can be remembered not just for her great American novel, but for her sharp wit and killer sense of humor. After all, another of her soon-to-be auctioned letters laments a new "holiday spot" in Monroeville: “That of people bringing their visiting relatives to look at me.”
