Adele's Comments About Her Beard Are Great

by Melodi Erdogan

If any celebrity was going to admit to growing facial hair during her pregnancy, it was going to be her. Known for her multi-Grammy winning bluesy singing voice, and her off the charts hilarious humor, Adele admitted to growing a beard during her pregnancy with son, Angelo, at her Glasgow concert over the weekend. Championing self-love while keeping things light with humor, Adele's statements are important for body image acceptance.

According to PerezHilton.com, the topic came forth when Adele was on stage and admiring the "good beards" in the audience between songs. Before you know it, she's explaining that her partner, Simon Konecki, often has to trim his "good beard" in the summer when it's warm, and that she has a beard herself — so she understands the need for grooming.

Apparently, the crowd laughed. But at that point, Adele said, "I'm not telling a joke. I actually have a beard, but I'm not proud of it. I call it Larry."

Adele went on to explain that Larry, as she named her beard, sprouted when she was pregnant with her son Angelo, who is now 3 years old. During pregnancy, it's common for hormones to increase and decrease in the female's body. Adele noted that there was so much testosterone in her during that 9-month period that she began to grow a beard.

Adele's frankness about a beauty "issue" may come as a surprise to any casual fan, but the singer/songwriter is quite outspoken and unapologetic when it comes to body image. Although she hasn't ever publically identified as body positive, she's championed stressing health and happiness over weight and/or looks; she's encouraged loving every part of your body and appreciating it for all that it is in past interviews.

So while most people would probably avoid admitting to growing a beard during their pregnancy, let alone declaring it in front of thousands of people at a public event, Adele is not one of those people. Combined with her wicked humor, it's clear that Adele can crack a joke about her body while still showing it self-love, and not worry about what others may think of her because of it. And that's important for other women who may be feeling self conscious about perfectly normal things that are happening to their bodies (like growing a beard due to hormonal changes).

While her confession may just be a funny bit between songs, or even something people call weird or unattractive, I call it an amazing way to instill positive body image. By telling her fans about Larry, her wonderful, glorious, pregnancy beard, Adele is offering support and information that can help future moms deal with their changing bodies during pregnancy with a light-hearted, humorous, and relatable tone. Plus, since she's arguably one of the biggest celebs of the moment, she's also proving that red carpet-goers experience the totally normal, kinda rad effects of extra testosterone with a bun in the oven.

On top of all that, she's admonishing the social stigma of it all, because who says a woman isn't allowed to have a beard and still be gorgeous? Just look at model Harnaam Kaur if you need further proof. There's certainly no one right way to be a woman, and that extends to facial hair.

Here's to Adele's truly amazing show of self love. And, of course, to Larry!
