Christie Explains Trump Support To Jimmy Fallon

Former presidential candidate and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie basically broke the Internet when he backed Donald Trump's candidacy. If throwing his support behind a guy that he was openly battling only weeks before wasn't surprising enough, the way he delivered it was: Christie stood behind Trump looking like he had been taken hostage, with a look of terror/panic/regret that went down in Internet history as one of the funniest (saddest?) things ever. On Friday night, Jimmy Fallon gave Chris Christie a chance to explain himself on The Tonight Show, but the governor didn't have much to say about why he supported Trump or why he looked so terrified while doing it.

Fallon has already had a lot of fun mocking Christie, bringing a cardboard cutout of the candidate on the show after the now-fabled Trump announcement. This time, the 2D and 3D versions of Christie were on the late night show, and the former was just about as illuminating as the latter.

"I saw you behind Trump on Super Tuesday," Fallon began. "You were standing behind Trump, and you looked like you were having a blast." He pulled a photo of Christie's panicked face as he flanked the mogul. Fallon continued: "Were you being held hostage at this time?"

"This is what you would look like if you were standing behind Jay Leno when he was doing his monologue," Christie said to a collective "oooooh burn" from the crowd. Christie went onto explain that when you're used to being the one doing the talking, it's difficult to stand by as someone else takes over.

That was about the last instructive thing that he said, though. As Fallon pulled out the cardboard cutout and put it behind Christie, he first said that was his listening face, then went onto say, "I like that. He looks serious," referring to himself in the third person. Christie then jokingly claimed that he was intentionally trying to draw attention away from Trump, which while that would be hilarious, is probably not true.

When asked about why he chose to support Trump over Cruz or Kasich, he only offered that he thinks Trump is "better than them." "It's not really hard," Christie continued. "I mean, that's why you do it. It's not like I drew it out of a hat or something, Jimmy."

That's a very Trumpian response: low on substance, vague, and noncommittal. Fallon pressed further, trying to see if Christie was trying to fish a vice presidency out of the Trump endorsement. "I have a hard time believe that anyone would ask me to be vice president. Because of that," Christie said, referencing the cardboard cutout behind him.

Fair point, Christie. But overall, not a lot of new information from the NJ governor. I'll keep re-watching to see if he subliminally signs for rescue from Trump.
