Tom Brokaw Reveals He Has Cancer

by Seth Millstein

Former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw has cancer, the network revealed Tuesday. Brokaw, 74, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August at the Mayo Clinic, and has been undergoing treatment ever since. According to NBC, his outlook is hopeful, and Brokaw himself says that he intends to continue working despite the diagnosis.

"With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come," Brokaw said in a statement. "I remain the luckiest guy I know."

Brokaw was hired by NBC in 1966, and has been there ever since. At various times in his career, he’s covered the Robert Kennedy assassination, the Watergate scandal, and the fall of the Berlin wall. He hosted NBC Nightly News from 1982 to 2004, briefly took over the reigns at Meet the Press after the death of Tim Russert, and remains at the network as a special correspondent. Most recently, he’s been covering the 2014 Olympic games in Sochi.

"I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter,” Brokaw said in his statement.
