In fact, there are several ways that your body could be telling you that you're using the wrong beauty products. From itchy scalps to less-than-stellar strands, there are many ways that your body can rebel against your beauty buys. So before you turn to a new product to fix these woes, try taking stock of the items you already have in order to find out what is and isn't working for you.

When it comes to selecting the right products, you have to fully understand your own hair and skin type. If you're not so sure on what these may be, turn to the professionals. Your hairstylist, dermatologist, or even your doctor are great sources for finding out what specific products may be causing your issues. As everyone is different, we all react differently to different substances or products. However, there are several tell-tale signs of when a product just isn't working for you. Wondering what those may be? Here are 11 ways you can tell that you're using the wrong beauty products.

1. You Have An Overly-Dry Scalp

In an email to Bustle, Allen Ruiz, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Hair Styling describes a few clear signs that you're using the wrong shampoo. One would be if your hair and scalp are overly dry. Instead, try reaching for a more moisturizing solution like the Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Shampoo.

2. Your Hair Color Is Fading

If you're hair color is fading, Ruiz suggests switching up your shampoo and conditioner. You may be using the wrong products for your hair type.

3. Your Hair Is Oily

"Many people think that having oily hair means you need to shampoo more often when in fact, shampooing every day might actually be what's causing the problem," according to Ruiz. In order to keep your strands looking their best, try shampooing every other day or only a few times a week to keep your scalp and strands healthy.

4. Your Curls Are Frizzy Or Undefined

Noticing less-than-glorious curls? It could be your styling routine. According to Ruiz, those with curly hair should be reaching for moisturizing products that contain humectants, water soluble ingredients like safflower and grape seed oil.

5. You're Constantly Sunburned

If you're experiencing constant sunburn, it may be due to your skincare routine. If you're using products that contain retinoids or any skin-lightening ingredients, this could make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure and therefore increase the risk of sunburn, according to Dr. Jessica Weiser of the New York Dermatology Group in an email to Bustle.

6. You're Experiencing A Rash

If your skin is inflamed with a rash, then you may want to turn to your beauty routine to find the culprit. In an interview with NewBeauty.com, dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse mentioned that "rashes can be caused by preservatives, fragrances or acrylates found inside cosmetic products." Be sure to speak with your dermatologist to see if any of your makeup or skincare could be causing the irritation.

7. Your Skin Is Burning

Despite what you may think, if a product burns that doesn't necessarily mean it's working. In fact, according to Lipstick.com, the product could actually be damaging your skin. Be sure to toss the product if it continues to be a nuisance.

8. You're Not Seeing Results

Did you know mixing several different skincare and beauty products could actually be the reason that you aren't seeing any results? It's true! In fact, there are several ingredients in the beauty world that shouldn't be mixed as they can render one another useless. For instance, as Dr. Weiser points out, you shouldn't use benzoyl peroxide and a retinoid in the same routine as they counteract one another. So, do your research before splurging on your skincare.

9. Your Skin Is Super Oily

One of the reasons that you may be experience an excess in oils on your face is that you aren't moisturizing it enough. According to Teen Vogue, sebum glands can overproduce oils in order to make up for their lack of hydration. Keep your face in check by properly hydrating your skin.

10. Your Skin Is Very Dry

The problem may be due to over-exfoliating the skin. According to WebMD, too much friction can strip the skin of its moisture and leaving it feeling dry and tight. Give your skin a helpful hand by cutting back to exfoliating once a week.

11. Your Skin Is Sensitive

If you're noticing an excess amount of redness, sensitivity, or irritation, it may be due to your beauty products. Be sure to check your products for harsh chemical ingredients that could be harming your skin.
