'Force Awakens' Won Big At The MTV Movie Awards

by Kayla Hawkins

The biggest movie in 2015 was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and while the new entry in the sci-fi franchise might not have cleaned up with any Oscars, the MTV Movie Awards was a total win for the film. Over the course of the entire joke-filled ceremony, The Force Awakens managed to pick up three popcorn trophies, for Movie of the Year, Breakthrough Performance (for Daisy Ridley), and Best Villain (for Adam Driver). The Force Awakens had an advantage before a single vote was even cast — Star Wars was the most nominated movie, with a possible maximum of 11 wins. So like when Rey first sat in the pilot's chair in the Millennium Falcon, the MTV Movie Awards and Star Wars: The Force Awakens are a perfect match.

Star Wars' box office domination clearly gave it an edge — because the voters, instead of industry insiders, are the same fans who lined up to watch the film over and over. The Oscars' Best Picture winner, Spotlight, meanwhile, didn't even warrant a single nomination at the Movie Awards. Droids, saber battles, and the central trio of new Star Wars characters Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren were a lot more popular with these fans, and it's great to see such a beloved movie take home so many trophies.

And even the categories in which the movie didn't win are telling of how much people loved it; in addition to the three areas it won, TFA was also nominated for Best Female Performance (Daisy Ridley), Breakthrough Performance (John Boyega), Best Action Performance (John Boyega), Best Virtual Performance (Lupita Nyong'o), Ensemble Cast, and Best Fight. Clearly, the MTV audience loved this movie, and they must be super pumped for the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the next adventure in a galaxy far, far away.
