Finally, Details About Sutton Foster's 'GG' Role

by Caitlin Flynn

The latest wave of Gilmore Girls revival news is in, and to say that it has fans in a frenzy would be an understatement. We've finally received official confirmation that Sookie will return to Stars Hollow, so Gilmore enthusiasts everywhere can breathe a collective sigh of relief. But, that's not all — the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly provided two teasers as well, and they're major. One: from the looks of it, Lorelai and Luke may finally get their happily ever afterEW refers to Luke as Lorelai's "fiancé," indicating that the two may be engaged. Two: Rory's a failed journalist. Of course, these tidbits are great, but that doesn't mean we don't still have plenty of questions. For one, have Paul Anka's fortune-telling skills improved? And, who's walking down the aisle at this much-hyped wedding? Or, perhaps most importantly, who will Sutton Foster play on Gilmore Girls?

Before starring on Younger, Foster played ballerina-turned-showgirl Michelle Simms on GG creator Amy Sherman-Palladino's seriously underrated show Bunheads — so she'll be right at home on set. She's a Tony Award winner, so it doesn't come as a huge surprise that Foster revealed she will play an aspiring actress in the GG revival. She told Vulture: "I can tell you that her best gig that she's gotten so far in life is the lead in the Stars Hollow musical... So, she's a struggling actress.” And, don't worry — in the third episode, "Summer," viewers will get a front-row seat to the aforementioned musical which Foster describes as "[t]he story of the town, Stars Hollow, told only the way that Amy and Dan could tell it."

If a Stars Hollow musical isn't the best way to celebrate those lazy, hazy days of summer, I don't know what is. And, Sherman-Palladino is pulling out all the stops for the Stars Hollow musical — Entertainment Weekly reports that the score is written by Tony Award-winning Fun Home composer Jeanine Tesori and Foster will be joined onstage by Christian Borle and Kerry Butler. (Is Miss Patty choreographing some amazing routines for the show? It hasn't been confirmed, but I think it's a safe bet.)

Of course, my next question is why an aspiring actress would head to Stars Hollow for her big break? Don't get me wrong, I'm still bitter than I can't actually move to this fictional town of my dreams — but it doesn't exactly seem like the best place for an aspiring star. The personal backstory of Foster's character still remains a mystery. Perhaps she's landed in Stars Hollow because she's a friend of Rory's, a love interest of one of Rory's exes, or the family member of one of our many beloved townies. Regardless, I'm beyond excited to see Foster in another Sherman-Palladino production — and it looks like her acting, singing, and dancing skills will all be put to good use in Gilmore Girls.

Now, let's hope Tesori found a way to incorporate that catchy "Those Lazy-Crazy-Hazy Days of Summer" tune into the musical. I know it was super annoying when Taylor & Co. performed it on a loop in Season 3, but something tells me that Foster could totally do justice to the Nat King Cole song.
