Adam Driver Was M.I.A. At The MTV Movie Awards

by Chloe Kent

MTV's 25th annual Movie Awards were in full swing Saturday night, but noticeably absent among those nominated was a certain Star Wars: The Force Awakens favorite. Given that the actor earned an award for Best Villain, and thatThe Force Awakens also took home awards for Movie of the Year and Breakthrough Performance, where was Adam Driver at the MTV Movie Awards?

In the past, the Girls actor has been shy about press, so it's no surprise he wasn't at the show. He isn't one for candid live interviews or red carpet appearances, and in fact, since rocketing to leading man stardom via his role in the sic-fi franchise, he's stayed away from most big events. The actor revealed to Stephen Colbert in March that he "[hadn't] really gone outside much in the past couple of months," and in 2015, he told NPR's Terry Gross that, "I'm not involved in social media. For me it just doesn't work," an attitude that certainly translates to Hollywood appearances. As of now, Driver doesn't have a Twitter, Instagram or Facebook page to speak of, telling Rolling Stone in 2014, "I don’t understand technology, and I’m very scared of it."

It makes sense, then, given Driver's admitted reluctant to make non-obligatory press appearances, why he might shy away from a red carpet as boisterous as MTV's. But the reason for the actor's absence could also have something to do with his busy filming schedule. Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently filming as we speak, but the set's whereabouts are tightly under wraps, along with its as-yet-untitled name. And while it's known that the film is set to premiere in December 2017, rumors of the film's location have placed its shooting schedule everywhere from Skellig Michael Island, Ireland to Boynton Beach, Florida. So Driver could be pretty much anywhere at the moment.

Yet regardless of where the film is shooting, Driver's co-star Daisy Ridley managed to make it to the awards ceremony to accept her award for Best Breakthrough Performance, so perhaps Driver's absence wasn't because he couldn't take a break to attend or was filming in some remote location. Could it be that the star simply didn't want to attend, or had non-work commitments? Perhaps, but fans shouldn't be too disappointed, as at least one Star Wars actor was there to make the night a Force-filled evening.
