Pharrell Should Be 'Happy' About This

by Caitlyn Callegari

There's an Oscar-Nominated song that has become the highest charted of it's kind in ten long years and spoiler alert-- no, it's not from Frozen. 'Happy,' the song sung and produced by Pharrell for the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack has become the first song to climb nearly all of the charts since Eminem's "Lose Yourself" which was penned for his movie 8 Mile. It comes as no great surprise that the upbeat, feel-good tune reached out and connected with such a wide audience. It's a song with substance, one that doesn't seek to shock but rather to please. It's easy listening. Pharrell was humbled by the news of its success and said, "I'm honored to have this experience and am so thankful that I was pushed (by the filmmakers). All the sharing and requesting and downloads? That's incredible."

Don't feel too bad that Frozen, though. Everyone's favorite animated musical is doing quite alright for itself. Frozen's big ballad, "Let It Go," sung by the illustrious Idina Menzel is right on the heels of Pharrell's "Happy" achievements. The song has not only been nominated for an Oscar as well, but has made it into golden pop territory in the top 20 of the Hot 100. After a sorely lacking decade, we're glad that powerful, theatrical songs are making a solid comeback.
