'Kimmy Schmidt' Tackles Another True Crime Parody

Long before The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story hit the scene, Netflix's breakout comedy series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt tackled an alleged Marcia Clark parody, which highlighted (and hilariously exaggerated) the relationship that allegedly existed between the prosecutor and her fellow colleague Christopher Darden during the time of Simpson's (or in this case, Kimmy's) trial. But if you thought that would be the only true crime this series would attempt to imitate, then think again. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 2 introduced what may be a Robert Durst parody that fans of HBO's The Jinx could certainly appreciate. Bustle reached out to Netflix for comment on the similarities but has not yet received a response.

Played by guest star Fred Armisen, whose character description until now had just been known as Bobby, the character in question appears as Lillian's former crush Bobby Durst (Bobby, perhaps as in Robert?) who is seen muttering to himself most of the time and carrying around a suspicious looking suitcase. This possible parallel continued to be a running joke for the remainder of the episode and even culminated with Bobby and Lillian singing a duet together at a deserted roller skating] rink with some very telling lyrics to say the least. "I knew from the start, that you'd break my heart," Lillian sang, while Bobby chimed in with the response: "And the burping. What a disaster."

For those of you who don't understand this possible Durst reference, Durst — who was arrested in 2015 for the alleged murder of his friend Susan Berman — was presented with new evidence that pointed to his alleged involvement in the crime during the penultimate episode of The Jinx documentary, and he retched and burped throughout the whole ordeal. His reaction had the whole country talking, so, really, it's no wonder the Netflix series' writers might want to incorporate a possible reference to Durst in the series. According to BBC News, Durst has always maintained his innocence in regards to the murder. The New York Times reported that he is currently serving time in jail for felony in possession of a gun, since one was found in his hotel room when he was arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder.

You have to see it all play out in Kimmy Schmidt firsthand for it to really do the scene justice, but anyone familiar with Durst's story will definitely see some similarities.
