Is 'Keanu' Really One Big Joke By Key & Peele?

If you are a fan of Key & Peele, and even if you're not (though, honestly, how could you not be), you've no doubt seen some ads or stories about an apparent movie the show's titular comedic duo are starring in called Keanu. The first poster for the film doesn't feature the comedians themselves at all, but instead showcases only a kitten; decked out in a do-rag, bulletproof vest, and gold chains. It's an interesting marketing approach, to say the least, and it has some fans wondering if Keanu is even a real movie, or if it's just some kind of joke being performed on the masses where Key & Peele pretend to make a movie but it ends up being fake.

Although the idea of Key & Peele fooling everyone into thinking they had made a crazy movie when in fact they didn't would be quite the feat, it's not the case here. Keanu is indeed a real movie. Not only that, but it's apparently a pretty good one, and currently has a 75 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 16 reviews. The film is about an average schlub named Rell (Jordan Peele) whose new kitten, Keanu, is stolen by a vicious gangster (Method Man). In order to get the cat back, Rell and his regular joe cousin Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key) have to join the gang, and immediately get in over their heads. Clearly, this movie is going to be insane. But why did they decide to make this movie in particular?

Despite how outlandish the plot seems, and how silly a lot of the jokes are, the film actually has a deeper and more profound purpose as a societal commentary... along with being the cat video to end all cat videos. Peele told Entertainment Weekly 's Chris Lee in December, "This entire movie was basically the most expensive adorable-kitten video of all time. Overall it’s meant to satirize how pop culture paints masculinity and what it means to be African-American — and how many of us don’t fit into the mold expected of us."

So not only does it look like will Keanu be a very funny movie, but it's also going to subvert social norms and make its audience think. And honestly, what else should fans expect from Key & Peele?
