4 Genius Ways to Hide Your Roots

by Julia Teen

The intentional regrowth look may be cool for those who can pull it off (we're looking at you, Rihanna and Ciara), but for most of us, dealing with roots is a huge pain. If you’ve ever colored your hair, you know just how annoying, time wasting, and money draining it is to hit the salon every two to three weeks to attend to your roots. Friends, there is a better way. Here are our top solutions to the most common roots issues — that don't involve a trip to the salon:

You’ve got lighter roots coming through your brunette shade.

Yep, reverse regrowth happens too. However, if it’s not too noticeable yet, you don’t need to take drastic measures. You may just be able to cover those pesky light strands by spritzing them with a brunette dry shampoo for a few more days.

You’ve only got a small section to touch up…so far.

It’s that in-between stage, where your brown roots are starting to show through your blonde hair, but not so obviously that you have to get to a salon today. Try a root cover-up powder like this one. It uses pigmented mineral fibers that adhere to hair strands to camouflage the color, and you can easily brush it on yourself.

Hints of grey are coming through.

You want to address those suckers individually. Combat grey flecks by temporarily masking them with this aerosol spray. It lets you target specific pieces of hair and covers them up until you lather up next. Get away with this until your next salon visit.

They're really, really showing.

So they're bad. That doesn't necessarily mean you need professional help. Head to a drugstore or peruse the selection of root concealers online. If you can’t find a color match that seems right for you, opt for the closest, but one shade lighter. Hair color seems to skew darker than it appears in pictures, and rather than stuff it up by going too dark, there's always the option for a do-over. Look for a product that has a comb applicator to make the process easier on yourself. For small sections of hair, try this touch-up pen.
