11 Fruity Lip Shades To Try Out This Summer

by Sebastian Zulch

When it comes to lip color, I usually gravitate towards dark shades like black or wild hues like lime green. But as the days grow warmer and I feel the warmth of the sun on my face, I've started missing summer lipstick shades. As warm weather approaches, I feel decidedly less anxious and in desperate need of a rosy, glowing makeover. Basically, I want my visage to match all the sunshiny feels inside.

I usually scoff at what I consider to be "totally basic" lip colors — like pink, red, and berry. But as the weather heats up, I become a total sucker for a berry pout, regardless of how predictable that might sound to my alien-identifying self. After all, summer lipstick hues go great with all the cool cocktails and fruit juices we'll be sipping this season. Who wouldn't want to be reminded of pink lemonade with a swipe of lip color?

Glossier's Generation G in Jam and NYX's Plush Gel Lipstick in Dime Piece are both perfect hues to wear while sipping on ice cold beverages, while MAC's Retro Matte Liquid Lip Color in DivineDivine will match any cotton candy adventures. Feeling more alien-esque? Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics' new Magnetic Fields collection and Lime Crime's limited edition Garden Alien Shades will have you covered. Whatever you're hoping to channel, here are some of the best lippies for a summer of fun.

1. Hot Pink For The Summer

Ultra Satin Lip In Brooklyn, $6, Colourpop

Hot pink lips with a satin finish are the perfect companion for any hot summer day in Brooklyn, or anywhere else. I can just imagine sipping sweet lemonade with this fruity hue.

2. Bubblegum Pink

MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolor In Divinedivine, $21, Nordstrom

This is the perfect shade of pastel pink. Plus, the formula is super long-wear, and makes for the perfect matte finish without any drying time.

3. Opalescent Purple

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar In Indrid, $16, Amazon

This opalescent lavender shade is just magical, and perfect for giving your summer beauty routine a touch of whimsy. Rock this lip tar for a subtle metallic sheen, which you can build into a fuller bodied show-stopping color.

4. That Red, Though

Lip Pigment In That Red Tho, $24, Milk Makeup

Besides the shade's hilariously rad name, this lippie is great for its true red color and high pigmented formula. Build the color onto your lips with your finger, and enjoy your touch-ably soft pout.

5. Jelly Lips

NYX Plush Gel Lipstick In Dime Piece, $7, Ulta

Try out this awesome tea rose pink for a subtle flush of color. Plus, this gel lipstick is equal parts softening lipstick and high shine gloss. Basically, it's the best of both worlds.

6. Berry Nice

Generation G In Jam, $18, Glossier

Glossier's first makeup collection has birthed my go-to lipstick: It's the ideal berry shade, and so easy to apply.

7. Alien Hues

Lime Crime Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick In Teacup, $20, Amazon

Jump on Lime Crime's limited edition Garden Aliens shades while you still can. This blue-purple hue is perfect for days when you want to change things up and channel your inner alien.

8. Kylie Jenner-Inspired

NYX Lip Lingerie In Ruffle Trim, $12, ASOS

Instead of waiting for the Kylie Lip Kits to come back into stock, or pay a fortune for them on eBay, check out NYX's Lip Lingerie Line, one of the brand's latest products that looks quite similar to the real deal.

9. Korean Beauty

Berrisom Oops My Lip Tint Pack In Sexy Red, $9, Amazon

Try this honey and collagen-infused lip gloss for a bold pop of color. Much of the fun with this one is the application process: You have to peel the gel-like stuff off after about 10 minutes, only to reveal perfectly stained lips that will last all day.

10. Sangria-Stained Pout

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick In Craft, $20, Sephora

From the people who brought you fantastic brow products, this longwear liquid lipstick has a matte and highly pigmented finish. Plus, this sangria-inspired color is just to die for.

11. Silky Red

UD Gwen Stefani Lipstick in Bright Red Mega Matte, $28, Amazon

Even though this is pretty much the only shade left to shop in Gwen Stefani's collection for Urban Decay, its super creamy and pigmented formula is well worth it. My personal favorite shade is Firebird, a deep fuchsia, but you really can't go wrong with a soft and silky red.

Have fun this summer, and try out every lip color under the sun.
